Got Defrauded..........

Some THIEF hacked into my laptop in Phoenix at the hotel. They stole over 2K out of my Epass Business acct.

It happened after I logged in, to check on my balance so I can pay someone there. Before you all start bashing Epass,it was NOT their fault, the THIEF,or THIEF'S had my password so there was no reason for the funds not being able to be transferred.

It went tru 3 accounts before being withdrawn.

All night after that, I am looking at people smiling at me shaking my hand, asking for their pics to be taken and wondering are they the ones who just done this to me?

I was not going to post about this, thinking the THIEF is probably reading this board and is chuckling right about now as to how he fucked me over, but It should be brought out in the open.

Appearently there are people in our midsts who follow the shows around and prey on fellow webmasters.

So a word to the wise, next time you want to use your CC for an online transaction at a webmster event with wireless connection...............DONT............. there is a very real possibility that someone is watching you, waiting to steal what you worked your ass off for:2 cents:

seeric 04-03-2007 02:12 PM

Oh wow, thats fucked up JFK. I can't even imagine what I'd do if I found out who it was. With as much as you do for this industry i hope they choke on the chicken they buy with that money. Gees. What a shitty thing to have a motive to do to someone.

sextoyking 04-03-2007 02:12 PM

Jfk,

Damm that sucks big time!!! so they got in via wireless and they could see the password you typed in to epass?

What a mess......

JD 04-03-2007 02:13 PM

wow man... wow...

Phoenix 04-03-2007 02:14 PM

ah damn..sorry to hear that man...is epass able to give you any details?

baddog 04-03-2007 02:14 PM

So, Jules, were you using the hotel's wireless or do you bring your own wireless with you (ie: Verizon)?

Sucks, either way.

stickyfingerz 04-03-2007 02:15 PM

Ouch that sucks. I wasnt there so I am in the clear on this one. phew. Be interesting to see if they get caught.

AGP Albert 04-03-2007 02:17 PM

This is horrific! Theft in general is disgusting and anyone who knows Julius can confidently say that he is works his tail off and lives out of his suitcase to bring us pictures of all our events.

Karma and shame work closely together. I was at the very first PHX Forum when I first met Julius. I am glad you are still around to share another great show outside of this negative event.

BoyAlley 04-03-2007 02:17 PM

Uhm, Epassporte implements SSL on their site right?

Your password wouldn't have been sent plaintext through the air, so even if someone was doing packet monitoring, they couldn't have gotten your password that way.

Unless they actually got a trojan / keylogger installed on your box?

Either way it sucks hairy ass (and not in a good way), I hate to see good people getting victimized. :Oh crap

Brad Mitchell 04-03-2007 02:17 PM

Can't Epass trace it down to figure out who the end beneficiary is? Motherfuckers, people like this need to be buried in the desert (or woods, or cement shoes in the bottom of a lake).

Sorry to hear this happened, Julius. I know that the situation is pretty grim in terms of recovery of anything but I am hopeful maybe someone will find the rat.

Brad

SxDx 04-03-2007 02:18 PM

Brad Gosse 04-03-2007 02:18 PM

TeenCat 04-03-2007 02:22 PM

Pete-KT 04-03-2007 02:22 PM

Nobody can be trusted in today's society, especially webmasters. Think about all the illegal activity webmasters do on a daily basis just to make a buck. Hell, half the program owners generated their start up capital by spamming AOL chat rooms.

I'd imagine they can, Paypal does it all the time. Whether they care enough to do so is another story.

If it was in fact someone in the industry, well, there is a good chance you know him and have taken his/her picture many times.

Horrible that this happened to you JFK.

As a policy, I never transmit any important passwords via a wireless connection. In fact, my wife and I have been transferring money between multiple accounts (closing down some old accounts and opening up new business ones) and I tend to track them on a daily basis. We were spending money left and right during the show, and I felt blind because I refused to log in via the wireless connection at the hotel.

And all of my passwords on my computers and laptops..... are 'encoded" with my own secret code which only I understand.

WiredGuy 04-03-2007 02:38 PM

Wow, that's insane. Did someone actually hack into your laptop and do this or was someone setting up a packet sniffer over the wireless looking specifically for CC info?

I hope you get your funds back, thats insane.
WG

B O B 04-03-2007 02:38 PM

WHat a fuckin downer.

Sorry to hear man.

what a way to ruin a good fuckin time.

Im sure epass wont do anything but give you the account name... "its a p2p transaction"

in cases like this I think it should be looked into more. because its really not p2p

kristin 04-03-2007 02:42 PM

D'oh, that sucks ... sorry to hear about this JFK.

Dveron 04-03-2007 02:43 PM

That sucks. Hope Epass helps you figure out who was responsible.

Yo Adrian 04-03-2007 02:44 PM

Damn! Sorry to hear it, terrible.

_Richard_ 04-03-2007 02:45 PM

The Other Steve 04-03-2007 02:47 PM

Something similar happened at an SEO convention last year - wireless connections are not as secure as we might wish they were.

The Adult Broker 04-03-2007 02:48 PM

no words to convey the disappointment about our industry and the lack of trust that seems to still happen. It bums me out to hear things like this. Sorry it happened to you :(

Rand 04-03-2007 02:52 PM

Sorry to hear this news Julius.

Sorry further that it happened to you.

Even more so that the odds favor it being someone we know.

Karma has a way of correcting things like this.

I've had three friends in three months have their identity stolen. Just goes to show you it's more rampant than most of us realize.

I wonder how a scumbag like the one that did this feels about himself when he looks in the mirror.

thehand 04-03-2007 02:53 PM

OMG, that is terrible! When you find this guys identity, please Let us Know so he/she can be publicly crucified!

pstation 04-03-2007 02:53 PM

It could have easily happened. most people don't check that they're going to https://epassporte.com/ instead of http://epassporte.com/ so it would have been very much possible for someone to setup a fake AP and launch a "man in the middle" attack.

BlackCrayon 04-03-2007 02:55 PM

Whoever did this you can be sure it wasn't the first time they've done it.

This makes me wonder if using hotel highspeed is safe.
Of course certain things are encrypted but say for example im connecting to a computer via remote desktop. can the hotel gain access to the computer as well or see what i am doing on it?

AsianDivaGirlsWebDude 04-03-2007 02:57 PM

I don't use ePass, so I can't understand how such a transaction could occur.

When I perform fund transfers using other services, there has to be a registered party the money is transferred to. Since it was your money, it would seem that ePass can tell you who the money went to (and you should have a receipt or documentation as well), otherwise I can see where all kinds of fraud is possible if the person receiving the money is totally anonymous.

Sorry to hear about this, and I do hope the thief is caught...

Sorry about your friends Rand. If they are in Cali or some other states please let them know to put a "security freeze" on all 3 of there credit reports - If they haven't done so already or already have fraud alearts on them.

Also ppl, subscribe to truecredit.com, always keep up to date on your 3 major credit reports.

1 payment per month, you can access all 3 reports, TU, Experian, and Equifax every 24 hrs.

Sorry again JFK - some ppl were not raised correctly.

hindsight is 100% , but I guess appearently NOT...... It did say when you signed up for it that it was an unsecure feed.

simple, you take the motherfucker and ask them what they are thinking about knowing they are about to meet their maker ? then you put two in the back of the head.
who ever did this to such a nice guy like JFK is a low life shitass.
hope you find the fucken JFK.
ask epass to help you and if they don't have records of where the money went they might be breaking US laws as I believe they have to maintain records since they do business in the US and as per US laws since 9/11 all financial institutions doing business in the US have to keep records of all money trails.
part of one of the bills they passed after the event.
they can also be taken to court for negligence if they don't keep the records.
