I don't get the whole Imus thing

I understand why the players/coach might be upset but seriously, is this worth National media coverage. press conferences, NAACP marches, etc?

Jesus Christ

all he said was nappy headed hos

Perez Hilton says worse in his blog that reaches a wider audience....

oh well, back to work.. nothing to see here

MikeVega 04-10-2007 09:12 AM

I agree ..It's stupid

With all the news that should be covered they cover that crap.

mikeyddddd 04-10-2007 09:21 AM

I don't get Imus... period.

My dad liked him, but I don't understand why anyone thinks he is even a little humorous.

OG LennyT 04-10-2007 09:24 AM

Someone on a talk show mentioned yesterday how Imus was a pillar of the liberal community and it's ironic how the liberal media has turned on him like a pack of wolves.

shoeaholicanon 04-10-2007 09:25 AM

what are we tgalking about mon? Imus?

Ninja_Pete 04-10-2007 09:26 AM

i agree. a reporter brought up a good point too. he asked if any of these girls listen to rap music...i thought that was priceless. "Nappy headed hoes" all of a sudden, turns out to be the worse thing ever said and deserves national news coverage. they are making it sound like it ruined these girls lives. yet, you can pick up any rap album and hear things 10000000000000000 worse, but thats no big deal. cracks me up. plus, who gives a fuck about Imus? the guys 100 years old and washed up anywho.

OG LennyT 04-10-2007 09:31 AM

Now that we're talking about this it hit me.

Imus is a whipping boy for the FCC, media, and anyone else that wants to crack Howard Stern's show.

LOL - Now that Howie is untouchable, Imus and every smalltime radio personality is going to be trounced for infractions on air.

It's all about the King of all Media baby :)

Yeah I don't find him entertaining. And he has that TV show during his broadcast and he's dressed like a cowboy a lot (from what I've seen). That DID make me laugh though.

OG LennyT 04-10-2007 12:32 PM

Jesus, I wish this shit would end... can't turn on any news today without being bombarded by this issue.

I wrote a whole diatribe about this last night, but didn't realize my connection had gone down while I was writing, and when I tried to post, the post was lost.

But as far as the bizarre amount of attention that this story is getting, there are three simple reasons.

1. Imus is a major figure in the media and political world - and so the people making coverage decisions are disproportionately interested in the story. Most people wouldn't give two shits about the story - but it interests the media and the people they cover - so it gets a lot more coverage than it deserves.

2. Many of the people covering the story have a stake in it. MSNBC wants to defend itself and grab curiosity viewers; CNN and FOX want to bring one of MSNBC's biggest personalities down; the newspapers (whose circulation is plummeting as most people depend on TV and the web for their news) want to show that they're the "real" journalists and above all of this.

3. The people fanning the flames have something to gain as well - Jackson and Sharpton are always trying to cement their position as "spokesmen" for the African-American community, and Sharpton is trying to gain an audience for his fledgling, low-rated radio show.

"Because them nappy head hoes getting jealous again, again" - kane and abel (Jealous again) lyrics.

Ravage 04-10-2007 12:54 PM

You forget that someone said 'Jiggaboo's and Wantabe's' directly after that comment. Its most likely that 2nd comment that brought it more attention, and since it's Imus, a celebrity (if you can call the fake cowboy that), its news worthy.

Probably true - but the "Jigaboo and Wannabee" comment by Imus's producer was a direct reference to the sequence in Spike Lee's "School Daze" movie. It's OK for Spike Lee to do it, but not OK for someone else to make a reference to his movie? That one I don't get - I find that a lot less offensive than what Imus said. "Nappy headed hos" was a totally offensive thing to say, and was completely without any "appropriate context" to justify it. "Jigaboos and Wannabees" was a pop culture reference to a movie made by a black filmmaker, and I thought that, IN CONTEXT, it was rather clever.
