Trial Members Areas

Should trial members areas show EVERYTHING a surfer can get ?

What should they be limited to seeing/accessing ?

I'm just working on launching a paysite mid may and I'm wondering the same thing. My research is showing that the vast majority of trials are limited...

In my (non experienced) opinion, it may be of more value to tell surfers the trial includes everything/full access

Another question... about what percentage of people buying trial access simply forget to cancel the trial?

show everything you have available. that way they can see what al lthey get access to if they convert to full. what we do is give ful users access to ALL of our sites. trials just get access to the site they joined. but it does wonders for converting trials when the customer sees 40 other sites worth of content and can browse through it, but when they try and watch it they have to upgrade. :)

you could also do it where trials don't get access to the high res versions of clips/pics. or trial members have to wait longer to get the new updates. any number of things you can do. trial and error to figure out what works best with how your members area is setup. i would advise against the "scam route" where a trial has access to like 10 scenes or something and needs to actually upgrade to get access to the bulk of the members area.

I like showing trial users what they're missing, have all the content in place but linked to the upgrade page. Offering all of your content to someone who just paid a dollar to be there is ridiculous.

IMO trial is just a step in the process and not the ultimate goal so definitely limit access but show them everything. See "Foot in the door technique"

The guy can only wack off so many times in a couple days. If your content is good, you want them to see and KNOW that if they become a full time member, there will be tons of different niches, access to other paysites (maybe not show them those members area during the trial), and large enough updates to make it worth a monthly fee.

They'll also appreciate any navigation ease, and all the perks that they don't get while surfing around free sites out there like minimal advertising if not zero, full length movies, and maybe even a model index.

Free Trial

Our free trial is limited and we still have a good record for conversions. We also give away minutes and give credit for referrals. You can look at intimatedvd.com

I think the real question is how much to limit and not of trials should be limited.. I've seen limited trials where the surfer isn't wasn't allowed to view anything, not even a single image - and I can't image that the surfer would feel compelled to buy a full membership after having paid 3-4-5$ for absolutely nothing.

IMHO trials should show maybe 1-2 full images from each picture series (and thumbnails of the rest) and a few videos. There should be enough content in the limited trial to make the surfer feel like he/she got good value for the initial investment and that he/she will get even greater value from a full membership.

Offering the full members area to trial joins will lower your trial-full percentage and increase front door conversions.

Increased front door conversions + lower trial-full %age = More affiliate payouts and less revenue = you lose money = you go out of business.

No reason to set a negative tone in what is a rare and refreshing business thread.

well we are working on a more detailed and limited members area for trial members, but what works for us is trial members do not have access to the multi-site access feature until they rebill or upgrade. basically join one site as a trial member and you get full access to that one site, but on the bottom of the home page you can see all of the sites that you are not allowed access to until you upgrade to a full membership.

Give away the farm.

They should be limited, hence trial members area.

There is no point to doing one if you aren't going to tease them into what they can see if they are a full member.

The whole reason is to increase your trial to conversion, many see anywhere from 45-55% trial to convert when implementing a trial members area.

Trial: a tryout or experiment to test quality, value, or usefulness. (Webster)

When you go to the ice cream parlor you see all the wonderful flavors they have to offer. And, you can get "taste" of any of them, but probably not all. You certainly don't get the whole scoop for nothing.

I'm a big believer in the low dollar trial for many reasons, not the least of which is improving your ratios. And if you are one who also believes that a trial membership should be somewhat limited compared to the full membership, we have a feature that dramatically helps boost your conversions. Upgrade Plus lets your trial member choose when they convert from trial to full membership. So, there's no need for the surfer to wait until the trial expires and the full membership kicks in. You have a happier surfer, a converted trial, and an improved ratio. Win win.

Hit me up if you want to know more.

Congratulations to the epoch team on this feature. If you are an Epoch client a strongly encourage you to look into their premium features.

or you just make your members area awesome enough so they never wanna cancel. ;)

J. Falcon 04-10-2007 06:52 PM

I believe trials members area must be limited since some surfers have software programs that can download all your material in a few hours. Therefore just allow a few selected movies and let them have that.

CuriousToyBoy 04-10-2007 07:37 PM

Thanks guys, I am hoping what we are working on will achieve the key points many raised on BALANCE ....

Stay tuned ....
