The whole point of building a cabinet imo is for the 'old school' feel... lcd screens just don't do it for me. Fine for puters, sucks ass for mame cabinets. The difference may not warrant a CRT over a LCD for yourself, but to me it would. If you can, I?d just check both out in or around where you plan for the machine to be, just temporarily mount the screens and see how you like each one. If LCD isn?t much of a difference for you then go for it! It?s all about personal tastes. >_<

I have two that can be converted. I have an old Tempest and an old Tron machine. I like the Tron cabinet better since it had a blacklight right in the front and a cool controller, the Tempest doesn't have shit, but it's in much better shape.
Also these things seem to weigh a few thousand pounds. I was hoping to go LCD to lighten the load. I already gutted the Tron cabinet, but I do see your point about them being setup for the old school feel. Otherwise I could just get some games on MAME or even some playstation games have come out with like joust and shit on them.
My other concern is I'd want more controller options. The Tron cabinet and the Tempest don't really have button configurations. The Tron game is a 'fighter plane' type joystick with a spinner to the left. I like the look of that setup but it's not really practical for like a fighter type game.
I may have to rebuild the controller platform.
