Coast guard cutter picked me and buddy up

Wow tell you about a humbling experience . We took my buddys boat out about 13 miles off shore. Seas were a bit choppy not to bad at the time. After a few hours of trolling fishing water was getting bad so we decided to head in. In a matter of 15 minutes sea went 3-5 feet to 7-9 feet waves. Now mind you we are in a 15ft boat so we tide are selfs to the boat in case one of us went over.

We got about 7 miles from shore when i shit you not a 12-15 swell came and lauched the boat in mid air. Thru my big as right out of the boat. Lucky for me we tied are selves off earlier to the boat. Battling the waves took me about 10 minutes to ass back to the boat. So as i got back on we fired the flares and called for coast guard help. About 35 minutes later a coast guard cutter came saftey guy came down like the shit you see on tv and picked us up one by one.

We both went to the hospital my buddy was all right. They game me some kind of warm iv because my body temperature dropped. I checked out fine but man i got serious rope burn around my waist from were i tied myself off with the rope.

Now when some shit like this happens to you makes you humble very quickly.
Those everyday problems you have aint as bad as you think lol. Needles to say my ass will be staying to shore for a while :winkwink:

I was about to mention something about the FL public school system, but your comment was more subtle.

Typos are when you hit an "e" instead of an "r." Trauma could not cause the errors in that story unless the boat hit him in the head.

WiredGuy 04-15-2007 12:17 PM

How much does a coast guard rescue like that end up costing you (ballpark)? Either way, glad your safe.

Pipecrew 04-15-2007 12:35 PM

I would guess it is on an ability to pay basis.

Rhesus 04-15-2007 12:39 PM

I would assume it's free being it's the US coast guard a service run by the US govt. Would think it's covered by your taxes, kinda like you don't get a bill if the police come to your rescue.

Unlike an ambulance which in most cases is a service contracted by the county or city you live in.

bushwacker 04-15-2007 01:08 PM

you got balls goin offshore in a 15 ft. boat, glad you are ok.

OzMan 04-15-2007 01:16 PM

You got more grammar police than sympathy. Sounds about right for GFY. Glad to hear you made it out ok. :)

A while back a couple girls went hiking here in California. They climbed a mountain if I remember right. Anyway, they didn't "feel" like climbing down so they called 911 or some emergency line. A chopper came in to pick them up. They later received a bill for $5k.

Non-emergencies should absolutely be charged. Thats just ridiculous. Tying up resources for mere stupidity/laziness. But I'm pretty sure real emergencies get plenty of leeway. If you go to the hospital with a screwdriver in your head, they aren't going to turn you away because you can't afford it.

woj 04-15-2007 02:17 PM

shit, sounds like fun :thumbsup

First of all, glad to hear he is ok but.....

13 miles offshore in a 15 footer is not balls, it is idiocy.

Mr Pheer 04-15-2007 03:18 PM

the coast guard is a branch of the military and funded by the department of defense, the rescue should not cost anything as you've already paid for it in taxes

Actually, the Caost Guard is part of the department of transportation, it is attached to the DOD when it is fighting a war. Right now it is being controlled by the Dept of Homeland Defense though.
