How long can you stand house guests?

I consider myself to be a rather welcoming person when it comes to inviting guests into my home. However, I have house guests at the moment that were meant to be here for two weeks and are now half way through their third week. I like them and they haven't done anything wrong but there comes a time when you just need your house back.

How long can you stand having other people in your house?

Kevin Marx 04-16-2007 09:16 AM

I had my Mom here week in week out for almost 3 years (not weekends).. she commuted from another state... I think your 3 weeks is tolerable :P

Sarah_Jayne 04-16-2007 09:17 AM

yes but that is your mom

StarkReality 04-16-2007 09:20 AM

Family as long as they want to stay, everybody else about 1 week...Friends are nice, but at some point I'm more than happy when they leave, especially if they spend hours in the bath in the morning.

Pumba 04-16-2007 09:47 AM

Play sick and they'll probobly leave themselves. Seriously, 3 weeks is more than enough for quests.

Sarah_Jayne 04-16-2007 09:52 AM

I generally don't mind guest but I started to get bothered by things like having to get properly dressed to go to the bathroom at night and stuff.

GTS Mark 04-16-2007 09:57 AM

At my cottage 3 days... At my house about 1 day.

fuzebox 04-16-2007 09:59 AM

I've had people stay for months, I don't mind at all. I like the company.

tony286 04-16-2007 10:12 AM

depends on the person anywhere from 2 days to a couple of weeks

ztik 04-16-2007 10:17 AM

3-4 days unless they are here from really far away and have a good purpose for staying here

ronaldo 04-16-2007 10:20 AM

We had a Mexican exchange student a few years ago stay with us for 6 months to learn English. Considering the loss of privacy and the language barrier, that was hard. Had it been a Swedish, female university student, it probably would have been a little more tolerable.

Since then, nothing more than a couple of days would be acceptable, excluding the Mother-in-law of course. She gets the overnight treatment.

clickhappy 04-16-2007 10:24 AM

Family: 2-3 weeks
Guests: 4-5 days

Jakke PNG 04-16-2007 10:25 AM

People can't stand to be my houseguests.
Just kidding, I never have people over in my city-residence though.. overnight drunk mates maybe, but never 'houseguests'.

My summer cottage is a different a matter, a few weeks without any issues.

RedShoe 04-16-2007 10:26 AM

I can tolerate house guests from Kentucky for 30 days (give or take a few days)

Angelo22 04-16-2007 10:35 AM

Usually depends, family can stay as much as they want as long as they dont get in the way...
Friends can stay for a few days for free
if they want to stay longer they'll have to contribute by at least cleaning the house, cooking (depends who...), etc etc

MissMina 04-16-2007 10:46 AM

One day that's it.....

VicD 04-16-2007 11:50 AM

a couple of hours and then i throw them out....seriously

Ayla_SquareTurtle 04-16-2007 12:37 PM

Right now I feel like I have a permanant house guest... room mates girlfriend. She lost her job so now she's here every damn day. Drives me crazy. Still figuring out how to get rid of her.

MikeVega 04-16-2007 12:44 PM

I have a 5 hour rule ...lol I don't like anyone over the house for more then 5 hours. if I'm having a big party then I'll make a ruling based on how much fun I'm having but generally i like my space and don't have many people stay at my house. I also hate when people just show up. Call first mother fucker !!

MandyBlake 04-16-2007 12:46 PM

my sister...forever. anyone else. 2-3 days max lol

mattz 04-16-2007 12:47 PM

I'm also a welcoming person and if it's a guest that I'm good friends with and they dont bother, I could stand having them around for awhile. Not forever though, I do like my privacy.

On the other hand, guest that I don't really like well and are annoying, I try to keep it short to a few hours

Tanya_AWP 04-16-2007 12:51 PM

Family = a month
Guests = a week....

If they are friends - I don't mind, but if just "house guests" and you feel obliged to entertain em - that can get monotonous and time-consuming :winkwink:

In the last 12 months we must have had 4-6 months worth of guests at varying times - but most were "easy" as guests and did their own "thing". Kinda like having guests for long breakfasts in the mornings :-)

After Shock Media 04-16-2007 01:02 PM

I do not really mind them all that much as long as the understand my very clear house guest rules.

I am not obliged to entertain them unless I feel like it.
I do not have to suddenly gain modesty I did not have before they arrived.
Kids are only permitted for a day.
Guest chip in for food every so often.
Guest clean up.

shekinah 04-16-2007 01:56 PM

our guests usually stay for about 2 days:)

CynthiaB 04-16-2007 02:00 PM

3 weeks! I'd kill someone. 1 week is about my max - maybe if you have a huge house and can stay out of each other's way - but in the end it's all about being able to sit down and surf porn when I want and I can't do that with house guests.

tical 04-16-2007 02:05 PM

3-4 days max unless it is my mom or sister

Ssv 04-16-2007 02:26 PM

2 months max, but that was exeption.Usually not more than a week

Mr Pheer 04-16-2007 03:00 PM

about 20 minutes

I have a short attention span and usually about 20 minutes I'm ready to go back to working. And I dont allow guests in my office space.

BrettJ 04-16-2007 03:02 PM

I'm the reverse. Family get fewer days or none. I have no problem putting them up in a nearby hotel and spending a lot of time with them while they are here but family feels more entitled to make themselves at home with out the consideration of cleaning up / etc.

Close enough friends to stay one night... can stay 5-7 days. but anymore than a week they better be damn good cooks and nearly invisible

Sarah_Jayne 04-16-2007 03:11 PM

I have to admit the free pug sitting while I work is a benefit but I reach a limit where I just need to be able to walk around naked if I want to or something like that.

evildick 04-16-2007 03:44 PM

If we're drinking I prefer them to be gone before I wake up. If they are not gone by 11 AM I usually start drinking again.

Probono 04-16-2007 04:16 PM

As Ben Franklin once said "After three days fish and guests start to stink. ...

I had that situation some years ago... I suggested to the roomie that if his girlie was going to stay, she was to pay 1/3 of the rent/utilities..
She decided to stay at her mom's place :)

Spunky 04-16-2007 05:24 PM

Two days max..they tend to over stay their welcome

IllTestYourGirls 04-16-2007 05:25 PM

if its not a party, 2 or 3 hours in my house is perfect.

LittleSassy 04-16-2007 05:55 PM

honestly, even if im a hospitable person, a week would be good. depends on their reason to stay...if its gonna be months, they gotta share the bills

yeah..anybody that goes to the roomate level should pay something..years ago we had a friend stay with us for 6 months and he never paid anything. However, he was in a really bad place in his life and I was fine with helping him get back on his feet. However, if he could have paid and didn't I would have been ticked.

v4 media 04-17-2007 04:06 AM

2 days unless they've brought a fine supply of weed/wine then they can stay a bit longer. Got my sister coming this weekend, but if she pisses me off I can tell her so that makes it easier.

You got to be shitting me?? Getting dressed to go to the bathroom? Unless you sleep naked then I think thats a bit weird.

Calico Jack 04-17-2007 04:27 AM

About 2 hours for me...I hate visitors.

jasminexxx 04-17-2007 04:34 AM

max 1 week for guests

Well sometimes I do sleep naked...but generally in something very light..what I meant more was after a shower having to put clothing on to walk to my room, etc

Mr. Manson 04-17-2007 05:18 AM

If this are my close friends or relatives then I don't really give a shit. They can stay for as long as they like but for the rest - not more than couple of days, I'm sorry I need my privacy!

I despise unannounced company. The vast majority of the time, I just won't go to the door.

Dugmor 04-17-2007 06:15 AM

I don't mind them staying forever...it does'nt bother me having random people living at my house !
