Especially with such a long history of mental illness...makes you question whether or not the retailers even bothered to do any sort of background check on this guy...

czarina 04-19-2007 08:27 AM

in Miami, you just go to a gun shop, show them your id, pay for the gun, and in 3 days, you come back to pick it up (the 3-day wait is called a "cooling period")

they check the criminal background, not the mental one. Funny, you can be a nutcase, and still get a gun, but if you have embezzled money or had a DIU or such, you can't. Hmmm... I wonder how rednecks get them though :P

Retailers did a backround check, mandated by law.

That backround check does not delve into someone's medical history.

Since the shooter bought the guns months before the shooting, the 3 day cooling off period doesn't really come into effect.

How is it funny?

No one with a FELONY should be able to own a gun, thank the Law for that.

Franckkkkkkkkkkkkk if i packed heat i would shoot you in the toe

campimp 04-19-2007 08:34 AM

while this dude definitely bought from a dealer, most criminals dont buy guns from a store, they get them used, or from gun shows where basically anyone can pick up a gun

being a graduate from va tech i must say the only way this could have been avoided is if someone had actually given a shit about the crazy shit he was doing in class before the shootings... anyone read his writings he turned into his writing teachers??? one teacher said she had a class go from 70 students to 7 students solely because of this nuts behavior and overall creepiness in class... how could that have gone without raising some eyebrows?

why is it that the university didnt shut down the campus following the first shootings?

sad day for the hokies

Kenny B! 04-19-2007 08:34 AM

I'm so happy to be a canadian! We have shootings too, but I feel safer knowing it's harder to aquire a weapon here.

Medical records are protected by federal law. Most western countries have similar privacy laws.

Juicy D. Links 04-19-2007 08:34 AM

Yet here in ny we can go into a gun store and buy a AR15, or any other automatic rifle at that, the biggest clip they have for it and then leave mins after buying it. :ugone2far

A hand gun is concealable.

An AR15 is not.

Still bothers me to hear that NY does not have a cooling period.

I posted about this before.

He came in, and once he stated shooting, everyone was ducking, and the feasablity of attacking him dropped. Remember he had 2 guns.

Still at columbine they managed, its fucked up what is going to do more damage a hand gun or an assault rifle (not in this case though), makes no sense to me.

No you can't. Automatics require a Class 3 license. And that is NOT easy to get at all.
AR15 is not an automatic rifle. It's semi auto and no different is then a regular hunting rifle except to for the bigger clip(which you can buy for just about any rifle). It just looks scary.

Yeah you're right, I've never bought a gun but I've know a few people who got there hands on some serious looking rifles with no problem.

That's the thing.
Alot of people make a big deal about the AR's and other weapons they call assault weapons but most are just normal rifles that have been dressed up to look scary.

AR stands for Assault Rifle.

The difference between an M16A3 and my Ar15 is a selector swtich.

From full auto to semi auto.

shoeaholicanon 04-19-2007 09:03 AM

how about we just dont buy guns and we dont have to know these details?

Assault rifles aren't a big deal though ?? I would think someone could do more damage with that then a hand gun.

You can't buy an automatic rifle in NY. You may be able to buy a semi-automatic weapon. Big Difference.
