I have a shitty power supply where I live and I live in the good ol U. S. of A. Not to mention California's been having rolling blackouts for a couple of years.

Like the friends I have who live in South America, I have a generator. When the power goes off, 30 seconds later the power comes back on again thanks to the generator. It's like MAGIC! :)

Rolling black outs? They're repairing and upgrading power lines over a few days, and so they have to shut off the power for a few hours at night. Oh the horror!

I live in God's country - The Blue Ridge Mountains :)

At least 3 programs owners have houses/property within 20 miles of me as does one of the founders of WebMD and a certain former president so it's not exactly the middle of nowhere. Heck, we even have a Starbucks!

We just happen to have above ground wiring in a lot of areas and a LOT of trees. When there's a storm or wind, I can pretty much guarantee my power's going to go out (ergo why I bought a generator). Plus the roads are very winding so inevitably, someone hits an electric pole - it's happened twice in the last 2 weeks.

But is a very excellent trade off for living where I can walk outside buck naked, enjoy my lake and my trees and no one except the deer and bears will know - and I'm sure the people in Costa Rica and Panama City feel the same way. Most people here can afford to live where they want :)

Back when I was in the telecom biz we had a power outage (in Atlanta - another one of those backwoods areas) for about 3 days in our switch. It was over the weekend and by Sunday night, my boss was calling all of us asking if we had credit or gas cards we could come and buy more gas for the generators with :upsidedow

Considering we had all the LD for the Atlanta Airport payphones (back in the old days before everyone 12 year old had a cellphone), it was kinda important to stay up, but 3 days straight with a center that big and we were hurting BAD. It came back on Monday afternoon - not a minute too soon as I think we were tapped out even after hitting the ATM machines.

Wow.. I'm really glad that I live in an area where we don't have that problem with the power. I'm in the Tampa , Florida area. The only problem that we have here is the water. Only allowed to water the lawns so much, etc.
