Body Worlds Exhibit??

Did anyone go see the Body Worlds Exhibit when it was in your city? I went and saw it when it first opened in Dallas. I am just curious what your thoughts are on it? If you don't know what I am talking about here is the link.....www.bodyworlds.com

I used to work in research with the plastics they used to plasticize these bodies. I used them primarily on bones, though. What is cool about this exhibit is they post the dates by the bodies and give a history on them. You will notice that the bodies that are dated 2002 or older look a little more "dried out" (don't give me a hard time about this but the muscles have a "freezer burn" look to them ) but that is the chemicals they use for the plastinization process....over time it deteriorates and will crack and dry out. The chemical they use on these bodies is the same chemical (one of the chemicals is) used to do women's nails...you know that "nail salon smell" it is called Methyl Methacrylate or MMA.

This exhibit received a lot of controversy because of the way he posed the bodies but what people don't realize is that if he just laid them down on a table you wouldn't be able to see different muscle groups and we are a "sick" society....look at how well horror movies do at the theaters. He has to pose them to draw interest.....I told my friends to use this exhibit as a teaching tool and to respect those that donated their bodies to science for this. The last part of the exhibit is fetuses and there is a mom with a fully developed fetus inside of her so be warned!!!

I have been trained to do full autopsies so this exhibit was a little disappointing to me because I felt that the bodies looked very "fake" they did not look real at all. But....I would go again because I still felt it was a great exhibit and would recommend that everyone go see it!! He does try to over stress the point on what smoking does to your lungs ....just so you know. It didn't bother me because I don't smoke but most of my friends do so they were a little bothered by this.
