HTML Question

so what page width is best for optimal viewing?

740? is 800 too wide?

fris 04-28-2007 01:02 PM

740-750 is decent

Steve Awesome 04-28-2007 01:07 PM

800 is too wide because you have to take into account a 1 pixel line on the left of the browser window and the scrollbar on the right. What Fris said -- 740-750 is accepted as being pretty damn good.

Webby 04-28-2007 01:10 PM

Somehow ya could have guessed this thread would not get "mad views" DG:winkwink:

Sure 740 as a "standard" but will go up to 870 depending. For the majority tho - prefer sticking to 740.

Basically use the following "core widths"

600 wide:

Allows for either a 600 wide main body or 130 margin and 470 body width (useful if it's standard banner width main body)

740 wide:

Allows for either 740 wide main body or a 130 margin and 600 wide main body.

870 wide:

Allows for a 130 wide side panel and 740 wide main body - or, can use a 600 wide main body and left and right side panels of 130 each.

But... that's only me :pimp :thumbsup

bobby666 04-28-2007 01:33 PM

this thread is too wide for me

cj_purve 04-28-2007 06:17 PM

i always use 750 unless requested otherwise ...

even though 40% of people have their resolution set to 1024 or higher, that's 60% that don't ....

psili 04-28-2007 06:31 PM

You can always try:

body { text-align: center; }
.main { width: 95%; text-align: left; }

<body>
<div class="main">
.... content
</div>
</body>

Then again, I was just looking at deviantart's CSS and my head wanted to explode, so I'd go for just 760px.

when did you last check your stats. I have seen only 11% using anything under 1024 on recent stats

mlove 04-28-2007 06:38 PM

i always do a width of 753px

Murderous 04-28-2007 06:39 PM

Ditto. Catering to 800x600 people is sooooo 2005.

When I build galleries I use 750. Anything else, I build for a bigger screen.

BV 04-28-2007 11:31 PM

I'm making everything 900 wide now, i used to be at 740

czarina 04-28-2007 11:32 PM

you can fit up to 776 for 800x600 resolution

Goodings Media 04-29-2007 06:36 AM

I use 750 if memory serves. Looks silly on a 19" widescreen, but you gotta allow for the majority of surfers using standard 15" and 17" monitors.

I thought people already knew these days that physical monitor size has NOTHING to do with resolution....:disgust

defiantphantom 04-29-2007 06:46 AM

I prefer 750px... If you like why dont you use &#37; instead?

yeah the monitor size will not do anything with the resolution... better if you use the % instead.

wyldworx 04-29-2007 07:04 AM

I salami press the screen with my cock and mark the length out with a texta.

footmonkey 04-29-2007 07:07 AM

It depends on who you want to view the page. Going over 800 is ok for certain sites, depends on the purpose of the site.

More importantly, How many of those cheap bastards at 800x600 are willing to spend the cash on a membership to a site. 800x600? Seriously, what year do they think it is?

I say 900px. :2 cents:
