Just how difficult is it to get into Canada?

Anyone with a criminal record (including some misdemeanors such as Driving While Impaired (DWI) charges) may be excluded or removed from Canada, and should contact the Canadian Embassy or nearest Canadian consulate well in advance of any planned travel for further processing, which may take some time.

Are they really strict about this stuff? If you do have a blemish on your record is it better to fly in or drive in if you want to fall through the cracks?

drive in if you got a serious charge

Define "serious" please.

just go up and knock on the door... when the mckenzie brothers open, make sure you have your tuk (tuq.. however you spell it) and say eh a lot...

Actually it's quite easy... went to Vancouver last summer... showed my passport, walked on in... took 10 mins from the gate, through customs, to the curb.

Do you have a record?

Call the canadian embassy locally and ask them.. but I'd' suggest driving if you don't want a big hassle. I doubt it would be very hard... but they do tend to not like people who have been charged with possession or trafficking of any kind, if you have any of those kinds of things on your record you should look into it first. Sometimes a simple pardon can eliminate all border hassles.

crossing the border via car/bike is easy

Well, the drugs were 32 years ago . . . not too concerned about that. The weapons charges were in 95, and have me a little more concerned.

I wouldn't count on falling through any cracks. And nothing sucks worse than making a trip all the way to the border only to be denied entry and turned back.

check this site: http://www.cbsa-asfc.gc.ca/travel/visitors-e.html

There should be a # or some kind of contact where you can ask someone to look into your situation.

Baddog got himself a little Canadian honey he want's to come visit?

:D

from what i read if you have a record, they only see that you have a record and not exactly what is on that record... i could be wrong..

i was reading about going from Canada to US though... and they can deny entry just due to the fact that you have a criminal record...

try flying into Buffalo and drive accross at Niagara, just tell em you're coming to casino Niagara for a few hours:winkwink:

mattz 04-29-2007 12:47 PM

quiet 04-29-2007 12:49 PM

BD I got someone who specialize in helping us people get into canada threw waivers and vice versa.

Hit me up if you want her contact info.

northboy 04-29-2007 01:01 PM

if you're an immigrant you'll probably get in just fine, they seem to really harass white people with jobs like myself. Mostly due to the fact Canadian customs are just interested in stopping people with cash, or who they think might be bringing back in undeclared items which they could tax. Weapons/Drugs/Illegals are not a priority.

ungratefulninja 04-29-2007 01:06 PM

Friend of mine had a theft charge. He got turned away at the border. They had driven there.

Michaelious 04-29-2007 01:08 PM

Probably as difficult as it is to escape

WiredGuy 04-29-2007 01:15 PM

They do take it seriously. If you want to take your chances are try to slip in, driving across the border is probably better. If they catch you, you can get barred from entering again though, so its better if you try to get a waiver for whatever charge you had.

Which is precisely why I haven't bothered as of yet.

I can't help but think that if I call them and say, "Hi, I am a convicted felon, can I get in?" the chances are diminished a little more than if I just try to slide in thru the cracks.
