just got stiffed for $150
So here what happened.
I installed a CMS (joomla!) for one of my clients. (I also customized a template for him.) The price we agreed on was $300US. I requested 50% retainer and the balance upon completion of all said work. All went well. And all work was done. but when i requested the balance the client did not want to pay. He began to try and make deals with me to get around paying the balance. He said thing like, " well i will send you some clients", or " well lets add more thing to the site and then you be done", hinting at things the were outside of the scope of the original project. So 1 year or more has past and this person still has not sent my payment. he has since ignored my email & calls. In a desperate attempt to get his attention i turned off the site (through the cms cpanel). This did get his attention but still did not sway him to send my final payment. And I just noticed the bastard has taken down the link back to my site. Normally i would just chalk this up as a loss but i cant seem to let this one go. I feel like he just flipped me off and I am enraged. I feel he needs to learn to pay his debts. its really not the money at this point its the principal. i mean 150 is not a "whole" lot but still, ya know? I wish I new some RU hackerscum that i could unleash on his site. So what do you guys think? What should I do? |
not to say it aint bad , but we all get fucked sometime or another....
i personally recently been fucked over for 5 figures and its growing weekly |
This happends all the time, you have to show screenshots, not deliver the working product until full payment.
|
Name the name and move forward.
|
Its a major problem for all of us on the net......
You don't want to ask for escrow because it instantly says you don't trust the client and is a bad start to a business relationship. You just have to take it as part of your business expenses :( |

Just post his name and chalk it up as lesson to get 100% down before dealing with people in this industry. This kind of bs happens with assholes in mainstream as well btw...
|
that's not good...
|
actually this was a mainstream client.
i feel like saving 2week worth of my kids shitty diapers and usps'ing them to his house. or i could post the domain and the whois but that wont to anything but send him more traffic. i even thought of posting some kind of ad with his address on craigslist. like "sat 5/19/07 free wigets and discounts on wobblys!" lol that would be fun |
Pay him a vist, and take a hefty friend along with you.
|
In non payment situations I will shut down the site and remove all the files after taking a backup copy. Usually people who don't pay aren't smart enough to either delete access to the script admin / ftp / mysql at the same time.

don't feel alone on this, we've all been fucked in the past...
|
take him to small claims court or put up a microsite for everything to know what this guy did to you so when they look up his company's name your micro site might come up letting people know the type of business this guy does.
this in itself might encourage him to pay you the 150 to get rid of bad publicity. |

the guy actually did the work before i chose his bid on the job. and guess what it cost me.... $30 bucks! Now if the jackass is smart he my have a backup of his data but, it is still proof of concept that anyone can be touched. for the right price. (lol sounds like some ish out of a sopranos episode.) anyways thanks again for the tip fallenmuffin |
I have full contracts before I do any work before a job... You live and learn.
I pretty much host all of my clients sites that I design, if I dont receive full payment within 30 days of a due invoice, I give them 30 days extra to at least make payment arrangements, if they fail to comply, I take down their site and all the files until payment is paid... Ever since I put this into effect, I have gotten every payment. It's really built on trust, I can pretty much tell right away which kind of people are going to be a pain in the ass. And I jack the price up, when I sence these types of people as well. :) Good Luck! |
i sent his company anthraxxx
|
not worth your time dude
|
Ouch! Learn PHP bombing, when they odn't pay just destroy their site!
|
I have sent out a team of ninja assassin ladyboys to kill him. Thank me later.

I've been burned before for around $500 too.
What I do now to prevent it is I take the 50% upfront, develop everything on my own server, and then upon completion I get the rest and send them the files. Works great because theres no trust issues. If I already have the code done they don't worry about paying me and me disappearing without sending them an email with the code. The only time i develop on a clients server is for affiliate programs, and that's only for larger programs. |

Its sad that you have to now have a ref, just to get work done.
|
