..And the award for biggest enviro hypocrite goes to..

Some retard named Mark Ontkush, and here is his blog post.

He had the incredibly stupid idea that creating a "black Google" - www.blackle.com - was good for the environment because it takes less energy to not display white pixels on a CRT monitor. That is actually true, however consider the following:

Facts:

- CRT monitors are being phased out and LCD monitors are in wide distribution and consume 1/2 - 1/3 the energy of a CRT
- LCD screens because of their backlight design actually consume no extra energy to display a white pixel, in fact, it uses extra energy to display a BLACK pixel
- The yearly energy savings would equate to 1.5 SECONDS of global energy use
- The yearly energy savings are equivalent to the power generated by a small wind generator
- Treehugger.com USES A WHITE BACKGROUND

Here is a blog post about it on treehugger.com with lots of ownage comments

Here is About Blackle

See the problem with these 'activist' types is that their amount of opinion is usually negatively correlated to intelligence. They possess such a strong confirmation bias that they don't actually care if they are factual, they just want to pump out their enviro-propaganda (in this guy's case he needs the propaganda because he is a 'green IT consultant' or some shit - basically, he personally profits from the propaganda).

"Empty vessels make the most noise" is a cliche because it's true - and every moron like this guy undoes the work of countless other people who don't have such a strong activist agenda that they use to personally enrich themselves.

I was once watching this documentary about logging. It spoke about what loggers do and how they work, it interviewed loggers. It also spoke about tree huggers and what they do, it interviewed tree huggers.

So they're doing an interview with the president of some tree hugging organization. I'm sitting there watching, mumbling about how impractical he was being... and then I happen to notice his desk. A big nice OAK desk.

I laugh whenever I think about that.

at least he is trying to make people aware

Loryn 05-18-2007 05:10 PM

Global Warming is a religion. It has guilt, it has a God (earth) it has fear and they are closed minded to any other scientific facts that prove anything different than what they believe. They have sin. The sin is not recycling. The sin is not following your dog with a Ziploc bag. The sin is any number of acts that you engage in to pollute. The sin is secondhand smoke. The sin is any clear cutting, development that people don't like, destroying wetlands, those are the sins. They have something to keep everyone in line, and that is the apocalypse, the last days, the day when hellfire and damnation will fall upon all of us who have sinned. They are always saying we have 10 years, everyone is doomed!!!

There's an initial Eden, a paradise, a state of grace and unity with nature, there's a fall from grace into a state of pollution as a result of eating from the tree of knowledge, and as a result of our actions there is a judgment day coming for us all. We are all energy sinners, doomed to die, unless we seek salvation, which is now called sustainability. Sustainability is salvation in the church of the environment. Just as organic food is its communion, that pesticide-free wafer that the right people with the right beliefs, imbibe. Eden, the fall of man, the loss of grace, the coming doomsday---these are deeply held mythic structures.

assume there are two kinds of people:

a) enviro zombie's who ate up the story
b) rational people with a brain

he made the people in group 'a' slightly more stupid and ignorant than they already are he made the people in group 'b' aware of how incredibly retarded he is.

I completely agree and I would be equally as critical toward anyone who hitches their trailer to a cause and exploits that cause for their own personal gain.

It's a general rule - ALWAYS try to understand the incentives that motivate a person's words/actions when considering someone's credibility.

Al Gore is the biggest scammer/hypocrite with his 'green' bullshit.

Celebs that buy into global warming are idiots (Leonardo that means you)

Calling global warming a religion is pretty silly. Unlike "God", the Earth is almost completely tangible. You can pick up it's dirt with your hands, you can let it run through your fingers. You can breathe in its air. You can see its beauty -- flowers that blossom, trees that grow. You can smell the fragrances (both the good and the bad) that come from the Earth. You can't do any of that with "God".

Global warming, from all the evidence presented, is most certainly real and no real scientist is going to sit there and try to debate otherwise. There is a consensus -- the earth *IS* getting hotter. Even neocon zealots such as Rupert Murdoch acknowledge global warming. Now as to WHY it is happening, that is where the debate is. Is it being influenced to such a large degree by human interaction, or is it a natural cyclical event, or is it celestial in nature (the Sun) causing it?

There isn't enough solid evidence to go on to support man-made climate change, we just can't simply account for several factors. What we humans do *does* have an impact, sure, but I do not believe that we could have caused 1/25th of the 'damage'. I personally believe the majority of the fault has to do with the Sun combined with a natural cyclical event on Earth.

First time I ever heard of a cult being created out of global warming - but hell, some folks have nothing better to do...

Excuse me while I start a religion over silicon chips and river sewage...

Again -- no real scientist is going to debate that global warming is happening. The only thing you can debate is the cause.

It mystifies me why the right think not polluting, recycling and generally trying not to fuck up the Earth is a bad thing. :error

Porn Farmer 05-18-2007 07:06 PM

As for this 'Blackle' guy, he's no environmentalist. He's just got a good gimmick for making money off Google search. He gets a cut of each ad people click on. :1orglaugh

No one is pro-pollution. We are talking about CO2 which isn't pollution. Most of the stuff you recycle ends up in the land fills anyways. If you feel better that a different truck comes to pick up your separated trash then maybe it's worth it. It usually takes more resources, chemicals, and energy to recycle than to just harvest new. Somehow people feel better about recycling.

BucksMania 06-21-2007 05:14 PM

Actually thats itneresting way to get some popularity to your site, but just that

chodadog 06-21-2007 06:04 PM

The guy is potentially a genius. He may be your typical environmentalist hypocrite, but if he's at all smart, he'll be earning some adword coin off of that blackle search and laughing all the way to the bank with the exposure that site will be getting.
