The $300 Million Domain Name guy
Great article about this guy Kevin Ham. I'd never heard of him. Seen his landing pages many times though. Interesting what he's done.

Go Canucks Go! :2 cents:
To 12clicks, are you serious? Typed-in domain names are never going to die... Thats what he is doing. Do you even know how many dumb ass internet user still think they can type keywords in their address bar? Well, more than you can imagine and this guy is making major money doing it! Macromind |
macromind, type-in domains have already lost some value, because of the way browsers handle typeins. People use to go to the top and just type "porn" and they would automatically end up at porn.com.
Now you do that, and you are likely to get a search page. http://www.google.com/search?q=porn&...e7&rlz=1I7GGLC So now typeins require that the surfer type "domain.com" to get to where they are going. With the addition of search boxes and toolbars on the average browser, the surfer has about 5 different places to search from, so it isn't a given that he will even type into the address bar. More likely, he will type into the google search, the live search, or the yahoo toolbar on their system - or to the computer manufactures search page that comes up default when they load the browser. They are still getting tons of traffic, but not like they use to. |
This calls for the proverbial cliche 'if only i knew then what i know now' :upsidedow

great read, super interesting
|
i was to young to register domains :))
|
Talking about being right place at the right time with the right idea. Mad props.
It doesn't surprise me that he comes to realize that all of his domain portfolio has more potential when turned into content-backed portals. PPC reaches its limits sooner or later. |
And I hate to say this, but the statement he makes at the end, about controlling the internet was not a wise statement to make.
