maybe Im so sensitive today because I took my oldest dog to the vet today

They had to send blood work to the lab ,he might have heartworm and cushings disease. If he has heartworm the drug company whose heartworm med I use would pay for it but he is old and the treatment could kill him. It upsets me a great deal more than I think it would.I will know Saturday or Tuesday the results.

Sorry to hear man. Maybe it will turn out ok for you guys.

That sucks, so he was actually on heart worm medication and he still may have gotten heart worms.

Gregory Black 05-25-2007 10:54 AM

I was surprised its not 100 percent ,thats why they will pay if your dog is on their med.

YanksAngel 05-25-2007 04:29 PM

man that totally sucks. My cat was poisoned by the bad pet food that continues to still be growing on the list of products. She was very ill and we almost lost her. She likely has some damage that will shorten her life span but at least she lived. Be very careful as I am sure you are already aware it is for dog food too. I will pray for a speedy recovery.

Man I am really sorry to hear that. My pit bull is 12 years old and got heartworms, and I have 2 separate pills, one that he gets once a day and one twice a day. The vet told me the same thing, that with his age he may have a hard time with the treatment. He was hacking and coughing really bad and would puke every time he drank too much water. He had a series of shots he had to go in for and stay overnight each time, and that was the toughest part.

The first few weeks his hacking seemed to clear up little by little, although I noticed when it was time to go for a walk he had to go RIGHT away or he would go on the floor. I think it's a side effect of the meds. After the first month the hacking pretty much stopped, and now it seems like the worst is over. Hang in there, man, it's tough but from what the vet told me the treatments have come a long way and the prognosis is a lot better.

TurboAngel 05-25-2007 04:45 PM

I'm so sorry hun, I hope the best for him.

tony286 05-25-2007 05:10 PM

beemk 05-29-2007 06:56 PM

thats good to hear

SilentKnight 05-29-2007 07:04 PM

Its rough, I know. But mercy is the kindest gift you can provide a beloved pet when the time comes.

We have an 18-yr-old cat that we'll soon have to make the hard decisions about, too.

Hope the prognosis is good.

(fingers crossed)

Should've read your last post.

Great news. :thumbsup

tony286 05-29-2007 07:09 PM

Thank you all, now he has to be tested for cushings disease.Im amazed my vet didnt catch it sooner since we have been seeing them since I got him.I looked it up online and I would be shocked if he doesnt have it. Once he is on meds it will make a big difference for him.The meds run $4-8 a pill depending on where you buy it. The old bastard is lucky I love him.

BBWTori 05-30-2007 03:13 AM

I hope he comes out of this with a clean bill of health!!

Makis77 05-30-2007 03:27 AM

lucky dog, lucky u ;)

TG Rebecca 05-30-2007 06:44 AM

congrats on the heartworm results being negative! now good luck with the cushing's situation. two of my four dogs are sitting on my lap and on my shoulders and i can't imagine what i would do if anything happened to any of them! they're my children! it's so hard to explain to someone who doesn't have a pet.. but animals are such amazing companions. best of luck with yours!

Smurfette 05-30-2007 07:00 AM

Good luck with the cushings disease, I know how expensive those pills are our dog had it but we couldn't treat her the best because of her diabetes, the pills kept messing up her sugar levels and we needed to keep that under control more. I'm sure you'll take great care of her, they are very precious :)

Boobs 05-30-2007 07:07 AM

good luck with you and your dog
