Crap . . . my blog has been found I guess.

It is getting hit with so much comment spam lately, I must have been discovered.

BigCashCrew 05-30-2007 12:20 PM

you gotta love all the comment spam you get while running a blog.

Sarah_Jayne 05-30-2007 12:23 PM

Generally it takes about a month of one of my blogs being active before I start to get the spam sandwiches...one got 500 spam comments in one day last week - yay for mass delete.

Roald 05-30-2007 12:25 PM

add a few plugins and they will be auto deleted.

Yeah, I hate that crap... I've had many sites where the forms get pounded by spam bots.
Captcha is about your best defense.

Well, the intent of this blog was that people could comment to ask questions, so that would not really work

I am getting about 1 a minute now

viki 05-30-2007 01:12 PM

I don't know about other software, but if you're using Wordpress there are quite a few plugins to help you out. Seems like the best option for you would be some sort of captcha verification.

Cyndalie 05-30-2007 01:14 PM

oh man i fuckin hate that shit. Mine 'got discovered' and I was cleaning out 15,000 before I knew it.

IllTestYourGirls 05-30-2007 01:17 PM

I feel your pain mine got hit by some loan spam, 18 to 25 at a time....good times

Sosa 05-30-2007 01:20 PM

yeah it sucks ass. On a few of mine I've had to go into phpmyadmin to clear out the comments. sucks

Monique Niccole 05-30-2007 01:54 PM

use SpamKarma

Zuss 05-30-2007 02:59 PM

There are comments in moderation (18,348) »

Snake Doctor 05-30-2007 03:18 PM

I've had my browser crash opening up the comments section in the admin to delete them, because there were too many to load.

Something I've done without using a plugin is to add www. and http:// to the blacklisted words section. Then people could still make a comment or ask a question but not spam their urls.

tranza 05-30-2007 03:20 PM

That's fucked up...

baddog 05-30-2007 03:21 PM

Again, this blog is supposed to welcome legit comments. Would be self defeating to block them all . . . although, truth be told, the comment spam pretty much makes it impossible for me to notice if there was a legit question asked

Yikes.. 500? That's insane..

RawAlex 05-30-2007 03:24 PM

When I install a new wordpress, the first thing I do is turn on askimet. It isn't perfect, but it is a good start.

Then I specifically block out:

.info/
.ru/
.pl/
.it/

and a couple of other things... those things alone get rid of about 99% of comment spam, and I only have to review occassional entries. Make sure that you do not enable automatic approval of comments, or your blog will get seriously fucked up in about 10 minutes. When these fuckers find their comments getting listed, then will turn around and literally jam thousands of them a day at you.

Secure your blog and help stop the fucking asshole spammers from getting anything. They all deserve to locked up.

OG LennyT 05-30-2007 03:27 PM

wordpress... they have a list of common spam terms that you can block out...

Setup some anti-spam plugins there :2 cents:

everblazin 05-30-2007 04:04 PM

Baddog the answer is simple, get a CAPTCHA wordpress mod, ALL your spam will go away, have a good day!
