Michael Moore's new film sicko, I havent seen, but from previous works I can imagine he takes a lot of things out of context and exaggerates the point. And its very unfortunate, because the argument can be made successfully without opening yourself up to attacks from the other side.

there is no possible way you can make american health care look any worse than it already does

michael moore may be annoying and he may flare some things up for drama purposes, but the overall message is ALWAYS there and he does a great job of promoting that message

Michael Moore specifically targeted HMOs in the movie, very little was said about standard health insurance. Which of course you can still have and go into medical bankruptcy.

After watching it, I envy the French.

If so then I can tell you I went with a friend of mine to a hospital there, he needed some stitches, they sewed him up and we left, didn't pay shit and they didn't ask us for any details...

Btw. the kid in question in the first post, the one that had a fever of 103 and died in the other hospital. The mother had insurance, but was told the company would not pay that particular hospital to treat her, she'd have to take it to another hospital that was in their program. The first hospital refused to do anything because they wouldn't get paid :(

Holy shit. I saw some of these reactions traveling around Europe when asked about our health care system.

It's fucking unbelievable. Healthcare for me is astronomical for some reason.

The US system is a joke and absolutely cruel to its citizens.

The canadian system isnt perfect but its a hell of lot better than the US system.

A lot of people have a hard time understanding or admitting it until its their turn to get stricken with illness and get royally fucked by their insurance company. As long as they are healthy and the insurance company is making money off them, they think its a good system.

Argentina has great free medical care.. of course the waiting lines are longer than the private health system but you got great professionals taking care of you.. and its all pre paid with your taxes.. .. btw we also have free University so you can also become a doctor for free.. the us should be ashamed they cannot offer something a 2nd world country can

Blame the parents for not taking the kid to the right hospital in the first place. Going to a private hospital when you don't have the money or insurance is YOUR fault, not the hospital's.

I would venture to say she was the exception. Both of my kids had temps at 103 and childrens aspirin took care of it. No hospital visit required. I bet you can find a lot of GFYer's that had high temps with no hospital visit required.

I am sure we are missing a lot to the story as is Michael Moore's M.O.

The fact of the matter is that it was ultimately the parent's fuck up. You don't go to Macy's when you only have money for Walmart.

I sat stunned for five minutes after watching that movie - heavy stuff man - too real and a sad reality - not getting better but worse everyday

I would agree she is the exception but when you get to the 103-104 range its a very serious issue that needs to be dealt with asap. The human body starts to shut down at that temp and the younger you are the more important it is.

But to say it was the parents fault 100% is a bit harsh and your missing the point about humanity and what a world power should be doing. She should have been able to go to the quickest hospital to get the care for her daughter and not had to call her HMO and find out the acceptable hospital in a time of crisis for a parent.

But unless you personally ever get royally fucked over by your insurance company and find yourselves broke due to the medical issues, you will never see the other side. And thats fine. I just hope if the day happens to you, there are lots of people that come to your side to help.

It's a very powerful movie and isn't really about the unisured people of America but rather the people who feel they are covered by their insurance only to get fucked right over when they get denied for anything and anything the insurance company can deny for, all in the name of profits and greed. Leaving people broke, stressed and dying. All people who thought they had good health care and paid good premiums for it. That's the truly sad part.

But people that have the "security blanket" and believe they are fully covered and will never get denied for the medical they may need, won't ever believe they will get fucked till they get fucked. Good luck having 2 heart attacks in a year and getting denied for coverage and lose your home at the age of 55.

The most striking point of the movie to me was the British system where they pay their doctors more for the number of patients they get to quit smoking, lower their cholesterol, improve their diets and exercise etc. What a novel approach. Treat the patients early and keep them healthy for cheap rather than wait till they are so sick and the cost of treating these patients is astronomical to the insurance companies and the tax payer.

I think the point is that its a sad state of affairs that the vast majority of people in the US could never afford to go to "Macy's" for someting as vital and essential as basic health care

Actually she called 911 and the ambulance took her daughter to the hospital that wouldn't cover them. When they got there and were told that her insurance wouldn't cover the visit the insurance people told her to drive her daughter to correct hospital. When she arrived the kid went into cardiac arrest and died.

I hope Australia's health system doesn't ever become like that in the US

MM compares the US to Canada a lot because we're neighbours. He likes to show how things are so different between the two countries; gun violence, terrorist fear, healthcare. And he asks the question, why is it better in Canada than the US?

Fact is, the Canadian Healthcare system isn't perfect. We are plagued with having most of our hospitals overrun, and under-staffing issues; But they sure as fuck are not going to leave you lying on a hospital floor, coughing up blood till you die. If this lady was brought into a Canadian hospital, she would have been looked at immediately, and she might still be alive today.

In 1987, I got sick in France and had a fever of 103, I was taken to a French hospital in Nice, admitted immediately, test run, problem diagnosed, and treatment started fast. I spent 3 days there, one day they had a nurse with me 24 hours until the fever broke. I was released with meds and anti-biotics.


Cost was nothing out of my pocket. The French are very compassionate, they told me the care was a gift from the French. I have never forgotten what they did for me and their excellent care.

Long story short, I was impressed.

When i lived in Ecuador and got sick a few times, i was impressed by the healthcare i received there. BUT i went to everything private and paid cash but i never had a bill break $100 and i received top of the line care, private nurse, high tech imaging machine...

i had a doctor come to my apartment in Guayaquil, he hammered a nail into the wall and i had a IV drip going. I had some crazy food poisoning for a weird yogurt that has crazy bacteria in it(of course i did not know that this was teh case and the locals grow up on the yogurt) and i had a nurse for 24 hours, she only wanted $10 but when she left the next day i gave her $50 and she actually came back at nite to check on me.

Point of the story, if u go to Ecuador, do not get PERSA YOGURT. Americans are not use to the bacteria level lol
