well did he knew that when he started the job, and were you his direct contact?

if so, you are in charge of his payments and you should pay him now.

if you just referred him you cannot be held responsible for his loss.

we're deal with Karl that he'll pay at parts so thread is close.

hope so this situation will not repeat again for both of us at future.
