How much should brake pads cost?

brake pads on their own

and rotors

Jman 07-03-2007 07:43 AM

depends on the car ;-)

I'm pretty sure there's a huge price difference from a Pinto to a Porsche

fris 07-03-2007 07:45 AM

dont you watch the midas commercials? :p

Ravage 07-03-2007 07:47 AM

Definitely depends on the car. And since you're driving a BMW, expect to pay some good $$ on them.

Phoenix 07-03-2007 07:52 AM

530i

im thinking 800-1500 depending on whether or not i need rotors as well

Phoenix 07-03-2007 08:23 AM

not even close to what i was thinking

Front pads 79
Front rotors 103 each
Rear pads 63 each
rear rotors 78 each

2.5 hours labour...so not too bad..today is a good day:)

k0nr4d 07-03-2007 08:56 AM

2.5 hours labour? thats a bit much...
damn, mechanic did all 4 pads and rotors on my 3 series in like 45 minutes. I probably could have done it myself in an hour and a half

XTuber 07-03-2007 09:00 AM

2.5 hours with beer. Much quicker without. If you're willing to spend $800+ on that, I will be more than happy to do it.

No clue what kind of car, although I think you had a honda when I was there last.

Go to -> Pep Boys or canadian equiv: "Pep Buddies" :)

If they can still be, you can get the rotors turned for like $5 each maybe $10 these days (haven't worked there since 98) at any shop.

Brake pads - aftermarket .. are around $40.00 for the average honda....

It's beautiful outside, perfect day to get your hands dirty

thehose 07-03-2007 09:07 AM

get ceramic ;-)

OG LennyT 07-03-2007 09:07 AM

I changed all 4 discs on my KIA for under $100 - took about 3-4 hours and at least 6 beers.

rotors should never need to be replaced unless you ran on bad brakes for months... even so, rotors are cheap too

D 07-03-2007 09:14 AM

I just had 4 pads, 2 rotors, front and back calipers switched out, and 2 rotors reground on my Suburban... and parts cost right around $500

ztik 07-03-2007 09:15 AM

2.5 hours labor is they watch a few tv shows inbetween each wheel?

Because of the super low costs for new rotors, there are very few places that turn rotors anymore. The ones that do charge for it, and it really isn't worth it. Pay maybe $100 or less for a new full thickness rotor, or pay $20 to turn one that will be used and thinner, plus the time that the car isn't available because you have it up on a lift or jack stands with no wheels on it. Plus many current model cars have rotors that are recommended for turning because they are made thin already to save weight.

Times they are a-changing.

Beamers carry a descent premium on parts, just because they can :)

Nah they always over estimate the hours, and go off the book for your vehicle. Its probably an hour over at least for what actual time will take.

DateDoc 07-03-2007 10:37 AM

That is not a bad price - I paid almost 1k for 4 brake pads and 4 rotors. I could have skipped the rotors but they would have worn out before the brake pads did.

YUP, they look it up in the book and charge accordingly.
