found 5 baby kittens behind my garage today.. what should i do?

dunno how they got there and if the mother still cares for them.

tomorrow i will go on vacation for a week and if they have no mother caring for them their death is pretty sure isn't it?

i know gfy has a lot of cat owners so maybe i could get some tips

directfiesta 08-16-2007 07:56 AM

Take a look today to see if the mother is there. She coul;d have moved the kits for safety.

If no mother, call the local animal shelter : baby kittens have good chances of being adapted after they get them thru the first few weeks.

animal shelter if you dont want to be theri mommy...but how about getting them some milk maybe add baby formula to it? a little needle..with the metal part out and you can squirt it into their mouths

tomeatsdinner 08-16-2007 08:09 AM

Yeah.. Animal shelter.. Poor kitties..

JayDeeZee 08-16-2007 08:13 AM

Baal.PitBull 08-16-2007 08:14 AM

just look the other way. If the stench is to bad when you get back you'll know they suffered for a long time while you were out sunbathing and the bodies are just now starting to bloat and decompose.

.

teg0 08-16-2007 08:18 AM

If the cats are just alone out in the open then I'd see if they will eat any cat food. A can of soft food probably. If they cats are in hiding somewhere I'd watch to see if the mother is coming back at all.

yeah but what if the mommy comes back and i took her babys

im sure they are not yet 9 weeks old (age you can take them away)

pornvue 08-16-2007 08:27 AM

yea the animal shelter would be the best option...or if you know someone that is interested in taking them, that'd be good

StuartD 08-16-2007 08:28 AM

Explain the situation to the animal shelter... tell them that you don't know if the mother is still around.
I'm sure they would investigate to further determine what to do.

It kinds depends on how old they are - any way you can post a picture?

It's possible that their mother is out roaming around, and considers that spot behind your garage a safe place to leave them.

Assuming they're younger, Just leave them be, and check them out at the end of the day. You might not actually see the mother, but if the kittens aren't covered in head to toe in their own feces, you know that they have a mother coming by to clean them up.

============

I had a mother once get hit by a car 2 days after she bore a litter of kittens - lil' guys haven't even opened their eyes yet... the next 4-or-so weeks were filled with me cutting class to come home from school and feed/bathe them in the afternoon, and then doing the same again after dinner every night.... they're each like a little shit machine, and they don't learn to clean it up until they're a bit older.

=========

If they're covered in crap, and you're leaving, I'd do as suggested, and call the animal control peeps - giving them instructions/access as to where they are, and letting them know you're not going to be around that day.

If they're between 4 and 6 weeks, it's possible that they've learned to clean themselves, but still need help feeding... in that case, animal control will need to know because kittens need to be fed a mother's milk supplement by hand... though a can or two of soft food nearby might allow for them to survive... but the problem with leaving them soft food is it might also attract unwanted predators.

Without seeing the kittens myself, it's hard to tell you what needs to be done... but I hope you find this information helpful.

I'm not a cat person, hence my joking solution, but if I found the kittens, I'd call a local animal shelter, probably their best chance for survival overall.

No problem, man - happy to help where I can.

If it is the case that they're clean and well fed, best thing you can do is leave them be - and interfere as little as possible - they'll likely move on in a few days. Getting too close to the nest or touching the kittens (unless you're prepared to bring them in) could very well affect the situation adversely... depending on how tame (or not) the mother is.

i would like to keep 1 or 2 i think.

not as indoor more as outdoor cats

Antonio 08-16-2007 10:00 AM

dont play with them too much, once they have your smell all over them the mother can reject them .......... no idea where I got that, could be false info as well lol

Call in the pros... Its just a phone call, and then all bases are covered...

I have a great recipe for kitty kreme pie.

It is a refreshing summertime dessert and is easy to prepare.

I think a safer bet is that they will just dispose of them. Is there a CSI: Kitty?

Maybe this is Canada's answer to the unemployment issue. Cat Rescue.

frostyimpressions 08-16-2007 10:16 AM

If you don't want to foster them and take care of them then take them to animal control closest to you. They will do what they can to find foster homes for them. Either way, contact animal control.

I am sorry for the leave them be comments.

Contact the animal shelter, let them know the situation and have them also try to trap the mother. That way all of them end up off the streets. Now true the mother would odds are be put down after the kittens are ready for adoption. At least they would all be fixed and you would not involentarly be contributing to a whole slew of additional strays in your area. Remember they breed worse than rabbits.

Sounds like an old men's tale... "No honey, you can't touch them or.... uhhhh... the smelll.... uhhh... the smell! The mother won't take them back!"

"Oh dear, well we can't have that happen" queue romantic sad feelings, mixed with secret relief for not having to take care of them

TubeTitans_SusieQ 08-16-2007 12:33 PM

I would call a shelter if the mother doesn't show

beemk 08-16-2007 12:38 PM

sell them to your local chinese resturant

evildick 08-16-2007 12:41 PM

My dad used to pick them up and throw them against a brick wall to break their spines. True story.

baddog 08-16-2007 12:41 PM

I wonder how many of you that are suggesting "call a shelter" have ever done that and had them actually come out.

I just tried and was told to "bring them in."

Do you have a camera, i have kittens right now can you take a picture so i can judge how old they are? Also put them abck where they were and wait 2 hours if the mom doesnt come back she isnt coming back, you can also pick them up and make them cry to make the mom come running.

I have but I also tell them I am in a wheelchair.
However if you stress you want the mother trapped as well they will come set a trap. Yet often yes they will want you to bring the kittens in at no charge.
