What would you use flv or wmv?

If you would start a new affiliate program, what would you use, FLV or WMV? And why?

dougeetx 08-23-2007 09:44 AM

FLV

Smaller file size. Easier to stream as compared to the bulky files of WMV.

RSD 08-23-2007 09:53 AM

Why do most of the programs have everything in WMV?

What about the problems you have with the fullscreen option on computers of about 1 year old? The CPU usage of flv is much higher!

RSD 08-25-2007 01:48 AM

How about the fullscreen option. On some laptops it is very bad quality.

The Woodpecker 08-25-2007 01:56 AM

For streaming there is no better option than Flash. However, you may want to consider offering WMV files if you allow members to download videos.

Adobe has announced HD Flash videos, so no more quality questions.

FLV if you want to keep your content off Torrent sites

KILL_FRENZY 08-25-2007 04:37 AM

FLV for sure

Kellie 08-25-2007 05:36 AM

Well what would you be using the videos for? I would say flash videos if you have an intro about your program on the main page, and then for afffliates offer both. Flash is a lot smaller on size and can give almost the same quality. Plus with all the youtube craze, theyre super popular. But also offer affliates wmv, for movie galleries etc, plus some surfers just like to download it on their computer and watch it later or save it.

testpie 08-25-2007 07:14 AM

FLV because there is a wider base of people with the Macromedia/Adobe Flash plug-in installed than there are with WMV capability, and FLV can be configured to easily stream and allow for jumping throughout the movie without waiting for it to load, which is something WMVs always tend to suck at.

RSD 08-25-2007 07:46 AM

What about the fullscreen? People want to watch porn in fullscreen. I did some tests on different pc's, including laptops.

A laptop of about 1 year old isn't able to play a movie in fullscreen. The video is playing very slow. The CPU load is 100%. How about this?

yahoo-xxx-girls.com 08-25-2007 07:49 AM

Not all webmasters have flash installed on their computer(s) and you might see a loss of sales if you use that format for promotional purposes...

.

RSD 08-25-2007 08:19 AM

What about flv for the members area?

ridikuloz 08-25-2007 08:28 AM

FLV loads faster.

If you use something like JW Media Player (one of the many free FLV Flash players available) on your site, it has a fullscreen function, which, as long as the end user has upgraded to Flash 9 (most of the time the Flash plugin itself will ask the user to update if they haven't got the latest version), allows for fullscreen playback.

This is a no-brainer. Do both. The more options you give the member... the better.

Brad Gosse 08-25-2007 09:42 AM

We still encode many formats for our clients. You are better to cater to every user than just the masses.

How does FLV curb torrent-based distribution?

RSD 08-31-2007 02:19 AM

How do you pin point a user to make the right choice.

If a members has a slow pc and he clicks flv... he thinks what the fuck, this is ugly, how do you make them clear that they can beter use wmv?

Isn't Flash less CPU intensive than Windows Media Player? In my experience the Flash plugin has been a hell of a lot faster on lower spec'ed machines than the Windows Media Player plugin, whether it be run on IE or another browser.

geeknik 08-31-2007 05:52 AM

FLV is best for streaming, but WMV is best for HD/Full Screen. :)

1. You put it in an swf.
2. you put the link to the flv in an as file without internet access not hard coded in the swf.
3. put your flv in a secure location only accessed by the swf.

something like that :thumbsup

dready 08-31-2007 07:34 AM

For surfers, FLV for sure. I'd also consider H.264 now that Flash supports it.

RSD 09-03-2007 03:34 AM

FLV fullscreen really hangs slow pc's it sucks up all CPU, unfortunately! WMV is great for slow pc's!

MBS Auto 09-03-2007 05:29 AM

Flv is the way to go if you know how to handle it

Chariott 09-03-2007 05:44 AM

FLV - can be also played almost in any webbrowser by any flash player.

RSD 09-03-2007 01:43 PM

On low bitrates and lowresolution it is still fucked on my p4 laptop... (vp6)
