GFY admins/mods - I think you have a problem

I have been contacted by two people today, both in NoCal, Bay area, and they have both reported that GFY has been inaccessible to them for the last two days.

I am getting tracerouts done, so if you want to contact me, I will pass info along to you.

ServerGenius 08-26-2007 01:24 AM

tell them to go through a proxy :winkwink:

Dangit, I thought you were going to say I was the problem.

It used to happen once in a while here, so I just got the IP and manually binded it in my hosts file...simple fix really:

start > run > notepad c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts

and make it look like this (there shouldn't be anything other and 127.0.0.1 localhost) unless you've added it. otherwise you might have some spyware, adware):

Quote:

# Copyright (c) 1993-1999 Microsoft Corp.
#
# This is a sample HOSTS file used by Microsoft TCP/IP for Windows.
#
# This file contains the mappings of IP addresses to host names. Each
# entry should be kept on an individual line. The IP address should
# be placed in the first column followed by the corresponding host name.
# The IP address and the host name should be separated by at least one
# space.
#
# Additionally, comments (such as these) may be inserted on individual
# lines or following the machine name denoted by a '#' symbol.
#
# For example:
#
# 102.54.94.97 rhino.acme.com # source server
# 38.25.63.10 x.acme.com # x client host

127.0.0.1 localhost

First off to baddog. Thanks dude. You always go out of your way to help.

Secondly I have to say this. It amazes me that people consistantly do this. If you are having problems with GFY why people do not use the admin email. You would be amazed at what happens to the people who put in request to the admin email.

So if you are having problems from certain IPs or locales email the admin and we will look into this right away.

geeknik 08-26-2007 09:14 AM

For the first time in over 2 years, I'm actually getting ping times to gfy.com that are below 80ms. Normally they are up near 300ms. :thumbsup

I heard they disappear, and are never heard from again.

:D

The two people that are experiencing the problem are both on Macs. I am pretty sure that isn't the problem.

The problem is neither knows how to do a tracert with a Mac.

Anyone care to tell me so I can pass it along?

Thanks in advance.

That's what all the good fake nicks use... I am sure they could give up one of their proxies for a day or two.

Well, I did see Stanford, but that was denied.

yes it does....the output can even change every time you run traceroute..
traceroute just shows you the route to a host on that specific place and time

Applications > Utilities > Terminal

then type in traceroute gfy.com

NOTE: traceroute is not abbreviated on a mac like on a pc.

You can also do Hard Disk > Applications > Utilities > Network Utility.

Thanks guys

if a traceroute stops somewhere doesn't mean it's broken.....traceroute like
ping sends an icmp packet which often is blocked by firewalls and routers.

it's displayed as timed out in that case

:2 cents:

If I have two people that stop in the same place, it is a good place to start looking.

what's the ip where it stops?

crockett 08-26-2007 10:24 AM

I'm amazed that people can actually post on this forum..

Just took me 5 mins to make my last post, the forum just sits there not responding, until I finally just close the browser. Re-open it to find the post, it's a 50/50 shot on that though, because it doesn't' always make the post.

I'm amazed at the money this place makes in advertising and user experance is pretty much ignored. This place for the most part has become a stop by and read a few posts. That's if I can open the pages without them 404ing, then move along. Rarely do I ever even bother to make a post anymore.

One of the reasons to use a windows or *nix OS.

Just because a non-user doesn't know how to do it doesn't mean the feature isn't there. And Mac OS X is a Unix OS.

And before you think I'm just another snarky Mac user, I'm not. I prefer PCs.

So they can find people that know how to do tracerts easier?

edgeprod 08-26-2007 02:26 PM

I had some odd downtime on one of my servers as well. The host says Cogent died off for a bit, but that everyone else could see them fine. The sites were completely offline for me, on my screen.

I got a couple of angry ICQ's, but the host denies it was down, so I dunno who to believe. Years ago, Cogent was heavily involved in the connectivity area you're talking about, I don't know if they still are or not.

baddog 08-26-2007 02:44 PM

Well, this is pretty interesting. One of the people got back to me and his tracert's came back with the following responses:

traceroute: unknown host gfy.com

unknown host gofuckyourself.com

A possible reason has been found, but I will start a new thread as it is more widespread than just GFY.
