NEED CAR HELP!!! had brake job....weird noise
 

this is the first time i ever had a brake job. Well all four, last time i just had the fronts done. When i am like rolling slowly and i press the brakes i hear a weird like metal noise. I am confident it is coming from the rear brakes cuz when i do the same at a slow roll and lift the e-brake i get the same noise. i have a few hundred miles on the brakes now and dealer told me they are probably breaking in...is this true or did they just do a shit job???? keep in mind when they do the brakes on my car, they give new calibers and everything....

It could be a couple of things depending on where you live 1 it could be your caliper frozen up 2 your e brake could be frozen or somebodt ripped you off.

lol, a "weird like metal noise" isn't really a good description of what your hearing. it may be normal, it may not be. ya kind of have to be a little more specific when you're describing car promblems:tongue:

If they put metallic brake pads in and you had normal ones before you might not be used to the sound of them. But it is really hard to tell without hearing first hand...

If they put metallic pads on the wrong kind of rotors that are not compatable with the rotors then it would make that noise, so that is a possibility

are they disk brakes? because nomatter what anyone says.. disk brakes squeek... even on bentlys

its a 1999 porsche boxster. When they change the brakes, they do complete job everytime, everything is replaced, new.

the noise would sound like banging a hammer into a piece of metal. its a noticeable sound when i am rolling and press the brakes or going slow. I cant tell if it makes the noise at high speeds since it blends it with other noises...i live in manhattan so no winter or cold weather froze anything, its hot as hell here right now...dealer in the city is a complete asshole which is why most times i drive an hour to another dealer for service but i am in a tight schedule and had to go to city dealer for service. my account rep there claims its a break in period. I never know of this....i just dont want my brakes to go out. Car seems to stop fine for now and i am not that car savvy so i dont know. its a thumping noise. maybe something is lose???

Metallic noises are not normal or even a "break in" sound. Slight squeaks may occur during break in but go away after a few 100 miles.

My adivce is, take your car out and beat up the brakes. Do some really hard braking without locking up the wheels. If the sound continues take it to a reputable mechanic...have them fix it...and bring the bill to the other guy.

Sounds like a brake pad that came lose on one end....when you brake the
pad hits into the claw...bounces back and repeats...
Only the top part of the brake pad is secured with a bolt...the bottom part stays in place
with a piece of metal and clambs into it......I don't know all the correct english words....so if it sounds
a bit dodgy....just go back and have it checked out....I'm quite sure that's the problem

thanks guys. i appreciate it. Just called the other dealer i go to and explained this and i will be bringing it there and they will look into it. He says too, its normal break in and that other dealer is lieing to me. lol

I checked the receipt and i have put on a lil over 400 miles and i do brake hard, most of my driving is in Manhattan...horrible drivers here....mixed in with the taxi fleet of wannabe nascar racers....

Not froze as in cold weather froze as in the caliper might not be getting fluid to it from maybe a pinch line. and the e brake can freeze up because of rust.

it could just be break dust and that is normal...

definitely not brake dust...it now sounds more link a gunk when i ran some errands before....this is the 3rd time the dealer in the city has serviced my car and i bring to dealer 1 hour away to fix their service job.

i knwo for sure its the rear brakes cuz it happens every time i lift the e brake up and only 75% of the times i apply the brake pedal and at certain speeds. And its the speed variations that is bugging me out, totally cluless why at certain speeds and not others....

OOOOOH....lol man do i feel retarded. I really dont know much of the mechanics or the lingo when it comes to cars. BUT i do know how to maintain one and keep it clean ; )

If you say it is a banging sound and not a constant griding sound, my guess is the break pads wore improperly so they are warped or the rotor is warped.

Porsche uses a soft metallic break pad and it is likely the pads wore improperly over the course of the 400 miles. It is also possible that a piece of the pad is chipped.

Let me know what they tell you - I am curious as i used to be a German Car specialist (Technician)

was told it was the bearings and for now they greased them and if the noise still persists than they need to be replaced. Let me know your thoughts on that...

As a licensed tech for over 20 years your only answer is take it back and have it checked.
Your brakes are to important for arm chair quarterbacks.
And from your info impossible to diag.

Hey JimmiDean...the dealer was the one that told me it was the bearings and lubricated them for me. If the noise comes back i will need to change the bearings....

1. loose calipers
2. pads not seated correctly in caliper
3. loose rotor
4. dust shield bent, hitting rotors
