How To Get Into Porn Without Being Fucked

Great read from Mikes blog, should be required reading for girls wanting to get into the biz.
http://www.mikesouth.com/wp/

I Get This Question A Lot From Local Girls Looking To Get In The Biz, It Seems That Craiglist is Ripe With Dirtbags:

I see listings here on craigslist.com with red flags all over them so I am going to do y’all a little public service.

My name is Mike South and I have been in the adult business here in Atlanta for over 15 years.

Here’s some rules to keep yourself from getting ripped off, hurt or scammed.

1. Nobody legit has any kind of “audition”. EVER.

2. Nobody legit does any kind of percentage deal or pays anything other than cash. (Many Companies In Porn valley Pay by check, but I shouldn’t have to tell you that a check from the real Vivid is legit)

3. Vivid, Wicked, Hustler, Digital Playground etc DO NOT have offices here or anywhere but Los Angeles, CA.

4. If it sounds to good to be true, IT IS. Nobody legit pays more than about 750.00 for a single boy girl scene or 300-400 for a girl girl scene.(rates in porn valley will likely be higher, but not more than double at most)

5. Nobody legit will have a problem with you bringing someone to the set with you. Whomever you bring is, however, expected to behave appropriately.

6. Legitimate shooters do NOT post anonymously. They have real email addresses, not yahoo or gmail.

Several girls looking to get into this business have recently been harmed or murdered. every single time greed overcame her common sense, don’t let that happen to you.

If you are height weight proportioned and looking to get into adult feel free to contact me directly.

Ok so you think you may have a legit offer, here are the questions you want to ask:

1. What company/website will these photos/video be used on?

2. ask for 3 references in the adult industry and check them.

3. know exactly what is expected of you up front and exactly what you will be paid, be specific also in what you will NOT do. Always do this UP FRONT

Finally if you are unsure about someone please email me at mikesouth at mikesouth.com with this information and I will help you out…no charge. I am simply sick of the dirtbags in this area who are giving MY legitimate business a bad name with unfair and dishonest practices.

Mike South

Tony u catch the Justin timberlake concert last night?

gwkg 09-04-2007 02:09 PM

NastyDollars violates #4 - I've seen them pay girls up to 2000.

BangBros violates #5 - A girl can't bring another guy on the bang bus.

They both have plenty of people running around the net "scouting" talent. Non-anonymous email address not required.

I'm sure they arent the only legitimate companies violating your rules.

Legitimate companies also do solo girl sites on %.

90% of the girls in porn are get fucked in one way or another (both literally and figuratively)

Your 3 tips are good ones though. Although, I would add to #3 - Make sure to say NO when you are about to do something you already said you will not do. Just because you said you wont do a gang bang or anal doesn't mean they wont try to do it in the middle of a shoot anyway. If you don't speak up for yourself in this industry, no one else will.

the best way is too push the decision out of the room, I can't until I ask my boyfriend. producers are very used to to this so we don't really argue with it.

Myself and many of the people I know use Gmail.

mikesouth 09-04-2007 04:04 PM

Ok When you deal with first timers like I do, you will get far better and more comfy girls letting them bring someone to the set. In 15 years I have never had a problem with this so either Im incredibly lucky or you are doing something WRONG.

As a general rule specially combined with other flags here a yahoo or a gmail address is a giveaway that you either want to hide or that you cant afford a real .com address.

Deal widdit

No I watched grass growing on the garden channel it rocked.

There's some good advice in general there, but a lot of legit people pay models by business check, myself included. Never had any issues with that. And many companies pay higher rates than you mentioned, unfortunately. There has been an unreasonable inflation in talent rates over the last few years, so you can't generalize and say that a company isn't legit just based on the higher rate. (Unless it was quoted as ridiculously high.)

davecummings 09-04-2007 04:29 PM

Mike South and Jim Gunn know their stuff, BIG time!

FWIW, you might find "How to be a Porn Star" in the free portion of www.davecummings.com of interest.

I would say in general those are fairly sound rules and good advice, but there are exceptions from time to time...

I'm certain no one would argue that we aren't a legit company and we have made girls interview for sologirl sites which would be similar to a “audition” except if any shooting goes on we always pay them.(and no, fucking is not involved with the process)

Second, we have offered percentage deals and I willing to bet if you ask BrookeSkye or KatYoung they will tell you it was a awesome move for them over a flat salary... :pimp

Antonio 09-04-2007 04:58 PM

I wanna be a pornstar

GAMEFINEST 09-04-2007 05:13 PM

< porn star ..

trishauptown 09-04-2007 05:14 PM

As talent in this biz I appreciate you taking the time to point girls in the right direction. Just want to put in my two cents..........from the talents POV!

Girls dont believe the audition line........and interview is that Q/A Style........not a blow me and lets see if you are good enough type audition

The % BS is just that usually BS!! There are some reputable companies out there.......that do pay fairly........but they are few and far between.

I am always worried when someone pays me with a check, even the big companies.........it is better they pay you with a check then you sign it back to them and the "cash" the check for you.......something to consider.......

Deal directly with the main offices....... in my opinion go straight to the top and if that doesnt work try an agent.

To good to be true, probably is..........but I dont like the whole east coast /west coast rates.......my rates are the same around the board unless I like ya.......or you want to pay me more.......

If I cant take an escort I am not going........I worked with a photographer for years locally....went on a biz trip out of town.....dude turned crazy!! So ya never know.........

I feel you should disclose all info about who you are before I shoot with you.
I understand some people have mainstream biz they want to keep separte.

Dont let temptation make your choices for you...........and dont let anyone pressure you into doing something you dont want to do.

Hope this helps.........

Many of those "rules" are BULLSHIT and and SELF SERVING.

They are intended to scare girls away from smaller, independent producers so that the bigger porn companies can keep their business SLIPPING AWAY FROM THEIR HANDS. And it is scaring the shit out of them.

So morons like this guy post this shit as scare tactics to try and keep girls away from legitimate small producers, i.e the guys who are the biggest threat to big porn companies.

Actually I just called you out on your own self serving post asshole.

The wheels are coming over your business model and you guys are shitting in your pants. Your solution? Scare models into shooting with you.

Good thing they are not buying your dumb "public service" list. Like this great nugget of advice:

6. Legitimate shooters do NOT post anonymously. They have real email addresses, not yahoo or gmail.

Lol... you must me really getting desperate when you post "advice" like that.

F-U-Jimmy 09-04-2007 05:51 PM

Most of what's been written here is sound advice i should know I've been shooting porn for more years than most people on this board have been alive, 38 years to be exact.

In all those years shooting in the UK, Germany, Holland, Spain and for the past 12 years in California i have only had one serious issue That was with a manager / boyfriend / asshole. Who had to be on the shoot, i agreed being the nice guy i am and this fuck-wad stole $25,000.00 worth of jewellery from the location i was using. The cops caught him about 12 days after the shoot but not before i lost a great location, a good friend, and i had to pay the $25,000.00 until the police released the stolen jewellery which took almost 12 month.
Since that day i have never allowed husbands, wives, managers boyfriends, etc. on any set or location. I fully understand the uncertainty most models feel on there first shoot with a new photographer and as Trisha points out even knowing someone is no guarantee they are safe to work with. I get around this issue by offering to meet the model and manager, boyfriend or whoever for coffee before the shoot so that i can answer all their questions and concerns if any. This policy has served me well for more than a decade with no problems.

I also find its sometimes better to work with agencies like LA Direct, Gold Star, Lighthouse etc., yes it cost more but you can build a reputation with the agency which will be passed on to the model.
As porn is my business i always pay buy company check, i have to keep records for our accountant and check stubs are my method of keeping track. Trisha makes another good point, that of signing and giving the check back to the photographer. He has a record and then its easy to give the model cash, the down side is that models shooting from out of town usually shoot for 2 to 3 weeks in LA and at $900 a scene she can be carrying more than $9000.00 around in her purse. I remember paying a well known internet model cash at Internext 2001. She lost it within hours and spent days crying and accusing people of stealing it. Just my :2 cents: for what its worth. Great subject by the way !

good tips!!

Lance69 09-04-2007 06:13 PM

There's always exceptions but most of those are bang on most of the time. Especially for new girls, those rules should be followed, at least until you sort out who the "real" exceptions are. The only one not excepted, would be the screen test or audition, not ever.
If your shooting with a producer for the first time an escort should be encouraged. And anonymous posts and hotmails etc. should just be avoided. A real business can afford the 8 bucks for a domain and email hosting. :2 cents:
