Southwest Airlines Tells Woman Her Attire Is Too Revealing

Southwest Airlines Tells Woman Her Attire Is Too Revealing

SAN DIEGO -- Kyla Ebbert says she wants an apology from Southwest Airlines after being told to get off a plane and change her clothes because what she was wearing was too revealing.

Ebbert, 23, told the Today Show's Matt Lauer that an airline employee asked her to come up to the front of the plane just before the crew closed the plane's doors.

"He told me, 'I'm sorry but you're going to have to catch a later flight because you are dressed inappropriately, this is a family airline and you are too provocative to fly on this flight'," Ebbert said. "I said, 'What part is it? The shirt? The skirt? Which part?' He said, 'the whole thing.'"

Too Sexy For Flight?

Ebbert said she was on a day trip from San Diego to Tucscon for a doctor's appointment and had no luggage, so she had nothing to change into. She was allowed to stay on the flight, she said, after agreeing to pull up her tank top and pull down her skirt.

Ebbert wore the same outfit on the Today Show that she was wearing at the time of the incident, she said.

Southwest Airlines released the following statement about the incident:

"Southwest Airlines was responding to a concern about Ms. Ebbert's revealing attire on the flight that day. As a compromise, we asked her to adjust her clothing to be less revealing, she complied, and she traveled as scheduled. When a concern is brought to our employees' attention, we address that situation directly with the customer(s) involved in a discreet and professional matter. Fortunately, as an airline that carries approximately 96 million customers a year, those situations are extremely rare."

SykkBoy 09-07-2007 01:34 PM

I've seen her getting quite a bit of support...I wonder if that support would be the same if she were 100 pounds heavier...

Brother Bilo 09-07-2007 01:34 PM

This is bullshit. From now on, when I get on a SW flight, I'm going to complain to the crew that this person is too fat and disgusting, or their shits too loud, or that guy is wearing a lame ass hat and I want them kicked off.

Now airlines can charge up the ass and they are fashion police? Please.

Brad 09-07-2007 01:34 PM

looks fine to me. Kind of odd attire for a trip to the doctors office, but maybe she's a gold digger or something.

TubeTitans_SusieQ 09-07-2007 01:42 PM

heard about this yesterday, if you have it flaunt it and they should have never said anything like that, it was rude and I would definitely get a lawyer for this.Southwest has never given me a problem about my attire and i have worn less.

punker barbie 09-07-2007 01:44 PM

Jeez, they tell her that her clothes are innapropriate, she fixed them, they let her fly....and everyone still thinks she should sue somebody.

Sue them for what exactly?

Plus we don't know the whole story, she could have been panty-less with her skirt hiked up 8 inches higher than it is in that photo. She could have been bra-less with her boobs falling out of her tank top. (They did say in the story she puller her shirt up and skirt down before they let her fly)

Our society has to be the most litigious in the history of the world. It's downright ridiculous.

Problem with that is that if you cause enough of an upstir (or even if you don't, actually), the airlines can kick you off and refuse to take you anywhere for causing a commotion.

The airlines (as things stand) pretty much have free reign in selecting who they'll fly and who they won't... and there's not a whole lot of recourse available for anyone pushed aside by the system.

I know one guy (a bit obnoxious, I'll give you) who was had his share of drinks on his flight, and then fell asleep to wake up an hour and a half later to ask the stewardess for another drink only to be told "I think you've had enough." He was a bit upset, and expressed himself thusly...

When he landed and went to the terminal for his connecting flight, he found that he airline had refused him transport for the remainder of his trip... he had to find and book with another airline - but only after spending a night in the connecting city - and, from what I hear, he was lucky he was able to find another that would take him - the "no fly list" is not a myth.

MikeB 09-07-2007 02:45 PM

I guess the question is - how low was she wearing the top and how high did she have the skirt hiked up?

Our society has to be the most litigious in the history of the world. It's downright ridiculous.

The point of the entire thing is that what she is wearing is what you will typically find in any mall, movie theater, or out on the streets every day of the week. For the record, ,she was wearing a bra and panties at the time of the flight. The person that complained about her attire was NOT a passanger, it was actually a male flight attendant that took personal issue with her. Her clothing is what is "normal" for a girl of her age and figure in todays society. I am a mother, and if I was on the plane and that women was sitting next to me and my child I would not have an issue with her at all. Taking public opinion polls and asking other passangers on the flight what they thought of what she was wearing, no one had an issue with it...they all thought it was just fine.

Ok, so they let her fly, but the issue is now not whether she managed to fly, it is what are the guidelines. Does the airline give you a dress code list when you book your flight? Who determines what is and is not appropriate? I have seen girls on planes in halter tops with their belly showing and wearing a low rise skirt on planes....so if there is going to be dress codes, then the airline is fine to do that, but they need to tell passangers BEFOREHAND what those rules are, just like schools...you know....your skirt has to reach the end of your fingertips.....the width of your sleeveless blouse has to be 3 fingers wide....shirts must be tucked in....oh hell....why doesn't airlines just make women wear 3 piece pant suits and men wear a 3 piece suit with tie...that way everyone is happy.

Iron Fist 09-08-2007 08:35 AM

Wow no one else has said it?

headless ghost 09-08-2007 08:38 AM

what ever happened to the idea that an airline's job was to get the plane off the ground on time and land at the destination on time?
seems that got lost somewhere.
remember the two pilots who sat in an airport bar for hours and got smashed and tried to take off in that condition?
or how about the planes that sat on the runway for hours and hours waiting to take off with no air conditioning and no toilet?
the airlines are trying very hard to self destruct.
private jets are cleaning up on the airlines total fuck ups that shouldn't have happened.

SpacemanSpiff 09-08-2007 08:46 AM

I went to the Southwest.com blog page and read all the responses. 99% bashed SW for what they did, but there were a few that posted that we needed to return to a more modest time, like the 30's or 40's where girls dressed more appropriately an knew how to act like a lady. Of course, they were all women.

I told them to "shut the fuck up, get in the kitchen and make me some fucking supper. And if you need an opinion, I'll give it to you. Now shut up before I blacken your other eye."

Not sure why they deleted my post. :1orglaugh

cnn says this incident started when a Male flight attendant complained that when the girl was sitting you could see her panties. I think he is a fag, I would have asked her to take them off!

stev0 09-08-2007 09:02 AM

Heard about that a couple days ago, I figured she would have been wearing a lot less.

SifuE 09-08-2007 09:06 AM

The horror...the horror.

I would hope that Southwest Airlines plans on picking up the tab for the counseling that poor traumatized flight attendant will most certainly need.

Kevin Marx 09-08-2007 12:56 PM

LOL.. she looks so prim and demure in those photos.. you know she had to have her shirt down to her nipples and the skirt halfway up her ass to have someone say something.

Southwest is in the business of serving its customers. If the customers complain (hey... you can see her panties over there... wait.. they are sheer you can see her crack!!!)... they have to address it. No different than the people that complained about the Muslims praying right before getting on a flight (that would have scared the fuck out of me too).

Moral of the story is don't bring attention to yourself... then people won't notice you.

I don't think she will get more than a few free flight passes from Southwest. As they say... even bad press is good press. Southwest is getting notoriety for escorting a lil hoochie mama off a flight LOL.. big deal.. I think they are probably laughing about it. BTW... she apparently did fly on that flight once she adjusted her clothing.

Angie77 09-09-2007 08:57 AM

That's what she was wearing? That's such crap.

mikeyddddd 09-09-2007 09:13 AM

What's ironic is that Southwest flight attendants wore hot pants and alcoholic drinks were free when they started.

They marketed themselves with "Love is in the air" and their ticker symbol is LUV, but that is because they started at Love Field in Dallas.
