What Was The Point Of Removing The Search From Gfy?

Now, there will be tons of people asking the same questions over and over. Gfy was a knowledge base when you could search it. The only thing positive is people not bumping old threads but how big of a problem was that?

High Plains Drifter 10-16-2007 04:10 PM

This thread has already been posted... do a search.

BoyAlley 10-16-2007 04:11 PM

The problem was that searches are what was slowing the site down to nearly unusable levels.

That's why, if you've noticed, the site is WAY faster now.

Now, hopefully they'll work to bring search back in a way that allows the functionality, but without the performance drawbacks. :2 cents:

High Plains Drifter 10-16-2007 04:18 PM

What's funny is that a couple years back the search was removed for about 3 months and NOBODY complained.

$5 submissions 10-16-2007 04:19 PM

Knocked half the functionality of the site off....

On the upside, page views for listings will probably go up as people try to search manually.

mahoney 10-16-2007 04:50 PM

that makes sense but i hope it comes back:2 cents:

I had it surgically grafted onto my penis.

Randyyy 10-16-2007 05:04 PM

the search feature needs to seriously be brought back, there's no point in using GFY now

fuzebox 10-16-2007 06:47 PM

GFY should really hire a real sysadmin if they can't figure out how to make vbulletin run quickly on this amount of users.

Linkster 10-16-2007 07:38 PM

fuzebox - theyve needed to do that for years - someone that knows vbulletin and server admin would be a huge boost to this board - but seems like it always falls on deaf ears

fris 10-16-2007 09:01 PM

the point was to see how many idiots would make threads saying why is search disabled

Wizzo 10-16-2007 09:06 PM

Its only disabled for people in Ca... :pimp

MattO 10-16-2007 09:07 PM

Fuck if forums like somethingawful can have thousands of users on at a time without a problem I'm sure GFY can be fixed.

Sorry man, you're wrong. People did complain...LOUDLY in fact. It just wasn't fashionable to have your own thread about it, and there were a LOT less useless posters.

When the search is back up I'll prove it if you need me too. I suspect it'll be up shortly after this skin is down.

What he said, quoted in non-color non-bold for your non-annoying viewing... because what he said is correct.

Also correct. People did complain back then as well.

Personally I don't mind putting up with the inconvenience for a while, as long as it eventually means the board improves. I'm all for improving things, always.

You know, that may not be a bad idea actually. Is it possible for Lens to farm out the search function? That way the load from searches falls on other servers, Lens pays for the bandwidth, we now have search AND a speedy board.

Doable?

I don't see why not, everything is doable. :D

ummmmmmm... Lens could do the same damn thing...

Drake 10-16-2007 11:32 PM

Just wait a few more years. It'll get fixed, that's a promise.

That was kind of my hunch too... :helpme

Tons, I still admin a board with 50k+ members, 500k+ threads, tons of daily whore threads and searches being ran around the clock, and the board runs snappy on a pair of low end servers from theplanet.com which I log into every 3 months or so.

I don't get how with 6 figures monthly revenue, and their own hosting company, why GFY can't manage to do the same...

yea but are you coming up with a better search function??

fris 10-17-2007 10:30 AM

you could mirror the search data over to another server, and do searches via another domain

Figure the scale of GFY. There are plenty of companies out there running bots 24 hours a day, probably every few minutes, looking for threads with things like "I need a host" or "spam me with feeds" so they can jump in an autopost bullshit.

There are also bots out there whacking at the DB looking for new threads so they can post "sig post" and "fifty pissed off webmasters" at the right point to secure sig space.

Then there is apparently a large number of extremely paranoid program owners and invidivuals who feed the need to search for their names 100 times per day to make sure we didn't say they are caners or that their program sucks donkey dicks or that they are legendary liars.

Your site ain't got nothing on what the GFY search is suffering through.

That and sometimes I think this board is run on massively out of date software, operating systems, and servers.
