Yesterday was one of the toughest of my life: My dog Sully has finally passed away.
For those that cared... Final update from this thread: http://www.gofuckyourself.com/showthread.php?t=736905
Old Sully finally passed away yesterday morning, peacefully at the vet's. He had one last hurrah the night before though. I gave him a bath as it has been rainy here lately, he was pretty grimy from the dirt and the leaves etc. After his bath I took him out to the back yard on the grass while I went in and cleaned some things. When I went back out to get him later I found he had wandered off. I walked for over 2 hours during that night (Wednesday night), from about 2 to 4 am looking around the neighborhood for him, but caught no sight of him. I thought "how far could he get?", seeing how his hind legs aren't all that strong. Part of me wondered if maybe he had crawled off somewhere to die. He ended up being gone from me for about 14 hours total before the humane society called me back and said they think they had a match. I raced down there and sure enough, there he was. He sure seemed happy to see me when his cage door was opened. I took him home and fed him a nice supper which he ate with gusto, with his pain medication mixed in it. Later on I got a call and it was the woman who found him and reported him to the Humane Society. She told me where she found him... the little bugger had made it a good third to a half-mile away from my house! On his legs and at his age that is an incredible feat. I of course thanked her profusely. He had a pretty good day on Thursday, although it was still quite wet outside. When I brought him in for the final time that evening he was a bit on the soggy side. I gave him some of his favorite treats (some pizza crusts) and his regular dog food, after which he fell asleep. I awoke at about 1:30 am to the faint sounds of him making noises down the basement. I went down and there he was, laying down and yelping for me. It didn't take long for me to figure out that this was it, and the remainder of that night would be his last hours. I covered him with a blanket and put one under his head, sat down there with him until morning, petting him, giving him more of his medicine, shooting some water into his mouth with a syringe, and I brushed and cleaned him up a bit. Come morning I wrapped him up in a blanket, carried him to the car and drove him to the vet. He got his final needles at just before 10 am with me right by his side. Let me just say, no amount of talking here or to others, nor any of the mental preparation I did over the past year even remotely prepared me for how hard this was for me. The ONLY thing that kept me going and gave me the strength to follow through was in focusing on what his needs are, not mine. By putting him first I was able to say goodbye rather than keeping him longer and making him suffer more. RIP my boy. You were one hell of a dog, no one could ask for better. http://members.shaw.ca/billy1-99/pics/sully_2002_03.jpg http://members.shaw.ca/graphx/pics/puppyguy1.jpg First pic taken in 2002, second pic was taken late 90's. If I am hard to reach for the next little while I apologize, I will get back to everyone who emails or messages me soon though. Thanks all, for the previous support and understanding in that other thread. |
Sorry to hear for your loss, but glad your final moments together were good ones.

As you know my girl finally died a year or 2 ago now...i remember coming & making a post on gfy, & you posting your condolences. Now its my turn.
Just remember all the happy times, your homes going to feel a weird emptiness to it forever now (get another puppy asap). I haven't been able to because i travel so much. But it hurts just as much 2 years later man...You'll never get over a good dog. I think I'd be less upset if a human i knew died. |
So sorry to here that CDSmith,I can guess how upset you must be .
My dog is like a child to me and and guess yours was too. Hope all goes well for you. Best Wishes Christina |
Yea a dog that lived 10+ years becomes so much a part of your life, its like losing a brother or sister or wife or husband.
I feel your pain CD, try to keep yourself busy bro. |

It's a tough loss, that's for sure. I still think about my best friend multiple times a day.
Time will help, sure it sounds cliche, but it is the truth. He was a beautiful dog, and he sounds lucky to have had you as a friend for so long. |

I'm sooooo sorry hun. I know how you feel, my cat has been gone for some time but I still cry about him.
:( |
CD - my sincerest condolences on the passing of your dog. And my respect for you as a human after reading your words above.
I've gone through the same situation (with a cat) - she was in her 19th year and passed away in my arms while on a rush trip to the emergency vet clinic. It took a long time for the mental replay of that awful day to finally subside. Know that you made the correct decision to ease the suffering. Its the kindest and most unselfish display of affection you can make. It won't seem like it now - but time eventually heals all wounds, as they say. I know. Been there...done that. |

Had to put my dog down last December. There is nothing I could say that would make you feel better today. It was one of the worst days of my life. But I can say things get better with time.
Take solace in the fact he lives a pretty awesome life. Even till the day he died, he had a great friend there with him. Can't ask for much more out of life. |
Sorry to hear that :(
|
sorry for your loss.

Hey CDSmith, I feel your pain.
A few weeks ago, my cat past away. He was 16 years old and miss him. |
|
Sucks to hear... your pets will always be with you in your memories.
|
Sorry to hear that man... I remember you telling me about your dog when I lost mine last year on Christmas Day, cherish the time that you had together and believe me when I say you will always think of the good times that you had together, I'm actually dreading the 25th of December because it's suppose to a day of celebration with my kids but and in the back of my I have to relive that days that I lost my best friend
RIP Scully |

You really need a good kick in the nuts! |
If that was one of the toughest days of your life, you ain't experienced life yet bro, sorry.
|
So sorry for your loss, its so hard to have to say good bye. I know ours was in our basement as well and barked out to Dennis for him to go down so he could be there when she died. Its so heart breaking. Like he said though, remember the good times and the little things that Sully did that might have gotten to you at the time, but now it will help you.
|
So sorry about your loss... Some people "get it" some don't... but when anyone, human or otherwise sticks by you, and provides the love and attention dogs do with their masters, it's not an easy thing to get over.
Best of luck in the coming days, and keep in mind albeit however to early it is now... In my experience nothing helps fill up the holes left in your heart from a good friend passing, then showering more love and attention on another animal in need. |
What you did was difficult, but you can feel good knowing that he is no longer in pain. My sympathies to you; he's a beautiful dog. I was away and was unable to be there when we had to put down my Benny, so I can say the pain of not being able to say goodbye leaves an emptiness as well.
|
Sorry for your loss, man.
I know how it can be, and my heart goes out to you. |
Sorry to hear the sad news, but take solace in the fact you were there for Sully when it mattered most. You helped him pass into the next realm as only a true friend would.
RIP Sully |
CD...It takes a lot for me to shead a tear. The image of your friend made it happen. So sorry for your lose, but you did the right thing.
For that hate dude..I'd love you to spend 30 seconds in a room with my 5 year old. |
Sorry to hear that man. Fucking sucks, I feel for you.
I just had to put my dog down on Wednesday as well. I am totally bumed out, every time i get up from my desk I think she is still following me. I still keep thinking shes around. My yorkie was 14 years old but spunky ass hell. her sight started to go about a year ago as well as here hearing, she lost a tooth a few month back and was alway grumpy when i tried to pick her up. then all of a sudden on wed, she fell over and had a seizure convulsing scared the hell out of me, then she never really recovered, walking in circles so after about an hour of that I decided to take her in she was one hot blonde. http://jasonnavarro.com/avatar/jami.jpg |
Beautiful looking dog.
You sound like an awesome owner and did what you could allowing your bud to live through with dignity. You get to keep the memories and that is priceless. R.I.P. |
