we do pay our mortgages, its the businesses that cant pay them and small companies.

my mortgage is paid up 4 months in advance always.

and yes we clearly do have the money to 'suck'. our reserve is more money than several countries put together

Reserves based on what?? It would take approx the top ten asset-holding countries of the world to begin to cover the account deficit of the US. If you want to compare country account balances - check this, but have a double scotch first :)

Current Account Balances By Country

Klen 11-03-2007 06:19 AM

It's easy for you since you live in USA.For anyone outside exprirence huge losses beause of so low value of dollar.

Where might one find those same stats dating back 8 years? Or even before the Gulf War?

I'd be curious to see the difference.

Good idea - would be handy to see their old records on archive.

But na, think you would have to go thru country by country to get these now - but they will be "somewhere" on the net and the US Treasury Balance Sheets will show them (but, they still need calculating since they tend to leave items off the main front page stats and stuff them in note sections.)

If it's the US stats you are interested in, can remember the current account stats for about six years ago - the balance then was around -$600 trillion. The real balance now is just under/over -$900 trillion according to the financial press, but that's not set in stone.

Pffft... the CIA isn't a credible source. I'll wait for The Enquirer or Fox News to provide the real information. :glugglug

Sure.. inclined to take that with a pinch of salt Stuart :)

Last time I went thru the actually Treasury Balance Sheet was for 2005 and, on the front page, it looked not bad. There was an overall deficit, but nothing different to most other countries.

Then noticed all the small note appendices, so started wasting time wading thru them with a calculator. And shit... when you added up all the "real" balances - it was a horror story. If the modest deficit on the front page included all the items hidden in notes - the deficit was something in the region of $650+ trillion.

And... when you take the eg $890 trillion on the current account balance and add elements which are not included within the current account balance, the real debt is something like $1.2 trillion. This includes items owing to US citizens and other accounts due for an assortment of stuff like rebuilding navy yards etc.

It's all in the smoke and mirrors presentation :winkwink:

Maybe one day the US had money to lend to other nations, but nowadays all they do is borrow whatever other countries will lend them and then divide the money amongst a few rich and influential people / corporations and fuck everyone else. :helpme

Dude, Canada is the one being nice to the US, I think Canada should stop all water, electricity, Oil/Fuel, grains, and softwood from going to the US.
Canada Assists the US FAR FAR more then the US does anything for Canada.

What resources does the US export anyways? I mean besides arrogance.

I mean if Canada did stop all that from hitting the US it would totally fuck the Americans pretty good.

So as a Canadian, I have a right to bitch about your shitty dollar because you are sucking up Canada's resources.

The United States has had public debt since its inception. Debts incurred during the American Revolutionary War and under the Articles of Confederation led to the first yearly reported value of $75,463,476.52 on January 1, 1791.

The US has only been at a 0 debt for a very short period off time during Adam Jackson's term.
According to Wikipedia that is...

Now why start lending out money when you have had a PERMANENT debt since your country started. Why not pay off your debt?. And why borrow any more to just fill up the other hole?

StuartD 11-03-2007 09:27 AM

I think it's safe to say that with the US owing so much to so many.... the world owns the US, not the other way around :glugglug

Enemator 11-03-2007 09:27 AM

And again: by the very creation of the country you created a debt which only grew.
One could say that's a weird thing.

I think I'm going to start a bank that has a big debt right from the start. Ofcourse, I'll have loaned all the money to myself

Yes, sure ... Guatemala + Sudan + Iceland. Wow, that's impressive!

Seriously though, check the source of billions of those reserves ... You apparently have no idea how much foreign capital is in your country and what would happen if they pulled it out.

And I guess you missed the study on how the Iraq war is costing an average of $7k per household? Gee, where's that money coming from? ... By the time you and I perish from this earth the USA is going to be so far in debt and the answer? More foreign capital... Good luck with all that grandkids!

Go read up on it before you reply, at least you'll have a shot at an educated response.

Over 80% of all exports out of Canada go to the US. The US is the largest foreign investor in Canada (over 70%). If Canada stopped exporting all their stuff to the US as you suggested, they would become a third world country overnight.

I think the biggest export is still agriculture. Corn and soy are pretty big in the US. Electrical equipment and large machinery (planes, etc) are big as well as industrial supplies. Then just basic goods like cars, appliances and drugs.

The US exports nearly 3 times as much as Canada does.

The US would go dark, millions would be without water, and lumber pricing would go through the roof.
Canada would do fine. Better then the US would fair.

Stopping export would be felt around the globe. Having extra of something is better then not having enough.

And of course my saying Canada should stop export wasnt a completely thought out idea.
But I wish Canada would at least threaten stopping the export of something to end the softwood dispute.

Cummon pk :winkwink:

Canada is rich in serveral areas and, as you said, exports to the US. There are plenty other nations who would appreciate some of Canada's exports (not just talking about oil).

The truth is the US exports a few more percent to Canada and, least more recently, this will be at lower cost to them. Canada is not lightly to be any third world country in our lifetime - with or without the US.

VERY relevant point $5:winkwink:

There are a few who charge and pay in Euros - Pay Serve is one :thumbsup

Got someone compiling a list now and distinguishing sponsors who just pay in Euros and other currencies while charging the usual low dollar value, and others who price more in line with eg the Euro and pay in Euros and GBP. Will post some info on this when it's complete :thumbsup
