no idea ;)- but as far as I know you need a contract with AT and T but there seem to be lots of ways around it

thx for the bump...

you don't HAVE to buy the contract. But you'll be on your an to get it hooked up without at&t. I spent about 3 hours to hack mine (totally free tutorials on the internet) and I have a fully functional iPhone.

IN THAILAND.

i know i have to get rid of att myself... the question is just whether the price for the iphone gets more expensive when you purchase it without signing a contract...
e.g. 599 /wo att, 399 /w att
or something like that.

u can buy it for 399$ in local apple store w/o contract.

When you activate it at home is when it renews your contract, not when you buy it in the store. The people at the store don't even need to know your name or number. Although they will generally ask to make sure you're using it on a consumer account and you're a legit customer and not unlocking them.

You don't have to sign anything in the store...If you activate it with Itunes it will initiate a contract.

Of course as others have mentioned if you activate it with other software there is no contract :)
