WTF! GoDaddy sending letters for domain renewal?

This is strange.

My ex housemate who didn't know anything about my work in this industry told me that he received a letter from somewhere for renewing a domain (explicit name). I had to tell an unconvincing lie.

What is interesting is that the domain doesn't expire till 2010 and I had changed my address with GoDaddy 6 months ago and I just checked again, in my account "send me letters for domain renewal etc" is not ticked.

Did you receive similar letters?

FelixFlow 11-13-2007 07:38 PM

man, godaddy always has someone bitching about their biz practices - so often that i wouldnt touch them with a 10ft pole

nice bouncing tits in your sig!!

SmokeyTheBear 11-13-2007 07:42 PM

i still remember when everyone had to get them ( domains ) from network solutions, they always sent the bill by mail.

$35 but you didnt have to have the money first you could just buy any domain with no money . you had a few months to make the money before they took it back if you didnt pay it.

teg0 11-13-2007 07:43 PM

interesting. I don't see anything in my account to avoid getting mailings. It wouldn't be that big of deal, but I'd like to avoid junk from them.

Go to account admin, security settings or something.

CIVMatt 11-13-2007 07:48 PM

thonglife 11-13-2007 07:50 PM

CyberHustler 11-13-2007 07:51 PM

I remember that, back in late 99 or early 2000 I think it was. Still kicking myself for not grabbing more domains.

and to answer the thread starter I didn't get any of those letters.

first thing you need to answer is why the fuck was your roommate opening your mail?

"former roommate" may be a synonym for jilted lover.

EDepth 11-13-2007 08:07 PM

I get letters all the time from 3rd parties not associated with my registrar. Basically some 3rd party is trying to get you to renew with them for 35$/year. And whats up with old roommates opening your mail lol.

CaptainHowdy 11-13-2007 08:08 PM

No, that is the code word for "mom".

:)

Vox 11-13-2007 08:45 PM

Godaddy called me last week about a domain renewal, the thing is that I renewed a day before their call.

96ukssob 11-13-2007 09:05 PM

I havent gotten anything from godaddy and ive had domains expire with them in the last few weeks.

I do however get tons of trash mail from "the domain registrary of america" and other shti like that saying that if i dont pay them $75 for my domain, it will not be renewed.

Ouch. This must have been many many years ago right? Which sponsor in their right mind would do that today? I would cancel my account with them if they did that to me. Imagine if the postal carrier delivered it to your neighbor by accident?

Bingo ...

It is not gadaddy ... but a scam for you to renew at a hefty premium ....
complain to the Post office, since it is made to look like a bill ... it is fraud.

Man, I am glad someone knows what is going on. Its not a renewal, its prolly a switch that hopes you'll be dumb enough to "switch" your domain to the new registrar for a huge markup.

Heh - that's what happened to me. I was locked up, at the time, and it was my mother who opened it while grabbing my mail.

wanted 11-13-2007 09:54 PM

V_RocKs 11-13-2007 10:12 PM

Some people consider renewal/expiration notices Customer Service.

DaddyHalbucks 11-13-2007 11:14 PM

Use Moniker instead.

:2 cents:

FreeHugeMovies 11-14-2007 12:30 AM

I remember those comments JupZChris made. Of course he was wrong in the end. Imagine that

cheekycherry 11-14-2007 01:23 AM

But when you finally wised up and moved them elsewhere it cost you a lot of blood sweat and tears, and oh yeah your first born son just to get them to release them....god I had some nightmare situations with NS

Sebastian Sands 11-14-2007 03:02 AM

they are upsell hell.. i don't like using them. I have a few domains there, but I have the majority elsewhere

The Dawg 11-14-2007 06:13 AM

Yahoo was bad with that also. Sending emails to: Marketing manager of NastyHoesWhoSuckDick.Com :(

Klen 11-14-2007 06:21 AM

This is why i am on moniker.

justsexxx 11-14-2007 08:35 AM

gornyhuy 11-14-2007 08:37 AM

Jesus people, a PO Box costs $25 per year, its anonymous, locked, and you can keep the same address no matter where you move.

Doesn't matter who you have your domains with, you will still get third party solicitations to renew your domain which will transfer them to the new provider. This has absolutely nothing to do with godaddy.

seeric 11-14-2007 11:02 AM

moniker and directnic are the only companies i would ever touch.

fuck go daddy and network solutions.

I get the same thing for all 900 of my domains so i just send a little note saying fuck off seal the envelope and place it back in the mail without a stamp,
my mail carrier said if they get delivered they will request the recipient pays the postage :321GFY
