Why do drivers license pics always come out looking like shit??

Can't they afford some decent quality camera gear and lighting at the DMV?
A booth type setup would probably work better.

I renewed my license pic a few days ago and it looks like crap. They shine this bright high beam light on your face that drowns out all your facial features.

I renewed my Passport picture at some corner store photo place and it looks a million times better.. the guy just took it with a regular camera too.

Am I right in thinking you Americans get your photo taken for free my your vehicle licensing authority, whilst we have to sit in a shitty little £4 a go photo booth which takes the picture just as you look away?

you pay a nominal fee for the license itself which covers the administrative costs, office people, person who takes the picture, etc. I think it varies by state.

My passport photo makes my license photo look amazing. I'm surprised I'm even allowed into countries after they see my passport photo.

I paid $65. Every 6 years now..

and get this... I am driving home and i get fucken caught in a police seat belt trap. Those fucks were stopping everybody and giving them tickets for not wearing a seatbelt. How the fuck do you get a fine for not wearing a seatbelt?? Who are you hurting by not wearing a seatbelt other than yourself?? Who's business is it if I want to fucken die because I have no seatbelt on?

So I ended up paying another $74

It's more because:
  • The police tend to be fucking lazy cunts going for the easiest crimes to handle
  • See above

in UK you have to have a neutral look while taking the id pic... otherwise you might get some problems with law...
