It's stated under their Program Policies:

Google will terminate your account in accordance with Section 9 of the Terms of Use if you fail to login to your account for a period of nine months.

Yep, and worse the ID is locked out forever ... it can never be used again - not even by the person whose account it once was.

People who trust free email services for important stuff do so at substantial risk - GMail owns the rights to all account IDs and revoke an account any time, for any reason!

I've been using gmail since shortly before it came out. I use it daily for nearly everything, including pulling my work email. Couldn't live without it.

9 months?? I can't resist without Gmail 9 hours, but 9 months? Obvisously would not need it anymore if I wouldn't login for 9 months.
Have to say GMail is the most addictive internet service I ever used. And don't worry you can get fucked with paid email too.

Gmail, just as everything that came from google is a completely useless. Actually, not so completely useless, I found one decent use for it. It collects spam. Everytime I'm required to enter an email address to get access to some website I don't plan to use on permanent basis, I use gmail. So when the email is shared with spammers, they just spam that piece of crap gmail. No loss.
