Best SNL insipred movie ever?

I had this debate with a group of friend's last night. I said Blues Brothers with Wayne's World as a runners up. However, we then got into a debate about what was considered an SNL inspired movie. Did it have to be a skit that branched out into a movie or could it just be SNL cast members that did a movie..in which case, where does Ghostbusters place?

So, what is the best SNL inspired film ever?

Damian_Maxcash 11-20-2007 05:10 AM

OK - somebody has to ask.... it may as well be me.

Whats SNL?

Mutt 11-20-2007 05:12 AM

should split them up between films whose characters began on SNL and movies that were produced and starred alumni from SNL.

hmmm...... i gotta think. i think Blue Brothers had some great moments but like all SNL movies and skits it kinda lost its way and dragged on too long.

Mutt 11-20-2007 05:17 AM

the list of films based on SNL skits isn't that long really - pretty shitty list actually - Blues Brothers would be the best of them.

No..Ghost Busters was 1984 and SNL started in 1975, I think. Bill Murray and Dan Akroyd had been in the early cast of SNL while Harold Ramis and Rick Moranis were off of SCTV.

Would be a longer thread if you were to list the worst SNL movies. The only half decent ones I can think of are the 2 Wayne's World movies and the original Blues Brothers.

How about these winners?

It's Pat!
Stuart Saves His Family
Coneheads
The Ladies Man
A Night At The Roxbury
Superstar
Zoolander

I didn't realize Office Space was from SNL though.

Forest 11-20-2007 07:56 AM

Blues Brothers hands down

Actually take Zoolander off that list, I don't think it originated on SNL.

Sarah_Jayne 11-20-2007 08:12 AM

I actually liked Coneheads.

Axeman 11-20-2007 08:18 AM

I'm pretty sure it was a Lorne Michaels production, so tehnically...does fit the bill.

CaptainHowdy 11-20-2007 10:05 AM

The Coneheads... Never saw anything remotely close to "Office Space" on SNL.

Mike Judge who did Beavis and Butthead did some cartoons on SNL that involved a few of the characters in Office Space...mainly the Boss and the red stapler guy.

Here you go:

Office Space is based on the Milton series of cartoons Mike Judge created for Saturday Night Live and Liquid Television.

I would have to say Blues Brothers, and then Office Space. The reason is the Blue Brother's movie is iconic. I love both those movies.
Then the Wayne's world movies..but as I think Mutt pointed out most SNL movies didn't fare too well.

Shagbunny 11-20-2007 11:09 AM

Office Space from SNL? I think because it is a Lorne Michaels production shouldn't make it a SNL film unless the main characters are from SNL too to qualify no?

ShellyCrash 11-20-2007 11:11 AM

The Milton cartoon was excellent. Little shorts of the Milton character and the character that would become Lumberg where they would take his stapler, move him into the basement, etc.

"Okay, but... if you take my stapler I'm going to have to burn the building down"

It was really on SNL, kinda like how they run the "Saturday TV Funhouse", it was like an Ace and Gary sketch, or a Fun with Real Audio sketch. Just a short cartoon that would nplay before or after a commercial break. :thumbsup

drjones 11-20-2007 11:50 AM

Blues Brothers or course...

Apparently Office Space was inspired by SNL shorts... learn something new every day:)

The Ladies Man is my next favorite. Never cared for the actual skit much, but the movies was damn funny.
