He is pulling the date from the Mayan calendar which has never changed and it has always been 12/21/2012. Strange celestial alignments will be happening that day, and I do mean strange like how the fuck did they even have a slight clue its so fucking rare strange and other shit.

However nothing in stone says it is the end, it very well can be the restart. Unfortunately the Christians in their infinite knowledge found these heathens and burnt up almost every damn written text they had. Which was beyond fucking sad. Though we do have a good understanding of their calendar the assorted cartooths (spelling), and what can be perceived as the end.

And all the computers shutting down wouldn't cause total chaos and bring about the end of the world? Seriously, do people even think before going on about the end of the world crap??

i think that when each one of us dies, its the end of the world for us. after that it really doesn't matter.

Interestingly - in addition to the Mayan - its also the end of the I-Ching - as well as the exact date that the earth and sun will line up in the perfect magnetic center of the enormous black hole that exists in our part of the galaxy - which is predicted/acknowledged by "some" scientists to be the point at which the last major tectonic plate shift occured on our planet many tens of thousands of years ago - so the magnetic theory isnt a bad one scientifically - just kinda weird that it lines up with the two earliest religions/societies teachings from the Mayan and IChing writings

there are numerous different doomsday predictions pertaining to 2012 and the end of the world. the mayan calender is only one of several. you have time wave theories regarding the i-ching, predictions from several well known oracles and prophets throught out history, and a couple others i know i've forgotten. theories regarding the outcome of polarity shift range anywhere from a massive outburst of natural disaster wiping life clean from the planet, to an ascension of consciousness and a bettering of mankind.

The first part is actually a physical scientific fact - what it causes - nobody knows (or at least are not going to put their scientific reputations on the line to predict) - the fact that you dismiss the possibility of anything happening to the earth like this, shows your total ignorance since it has happened before - although I would say that you probably believe that the earth was created by some imaginary friend you believe in - so its kinda useless to point out facts to you

Of course there is proof that the planet's polarity can and does shift. The earth's axis is not absolutely fixed either. I don't dismiss the possibility that something could happen, but I do say that it's highly unlikely that anything out of the ordinary is going to occur. I highly doubt a polar shift will enlighten the people, or that we will ascend to a new level of consciousness. Nor do I believe that a sudden wave of natural disasters will blanket the earth in a matter of days.
