depends on how much cpu and fast hard drives you have. I have seen a single box hold close to 15,000 virtual hosts.. but the ISP was probably betting that they aren't high usage... you need to watch the memory, cpu, and disk throttling as usage increases. its not so much the number of domains on one ip, its how much can that server handle under a load. you could have 1 domain that gets banged away on the server and bring it to its knees.. if you are looking to park domains that usually tend to not get alot of type-in or SE traffic, then you can load it up. I have one server that has 10,000 virtual hosts on it with 1 gig of ram and no problems. Fight the tech talk! |
The short answer is "unlimited"

you asked 2 different questions.. the answer to this one concerning for SEO.. you shouldn't put all your domains on one IP that are linking to each for SEO stuff. Google has access to domain registry info, so they can do the cross-referencing to see when people are doing this and matching up domains to ip, etc. You could use one box, but have it loaded up with many IP's across multiple IP's GotWebHost.com, MojoHost.com, WebAir.com, etc can do this for you The better approach is to have the web servers (virtual hosts) completely spreadout with different registrars for domains, etc... if you were going to play that game... So putting all domains on one IP for SEO is not a good idea, if you are playing the SEO game. Getting one dedicated server and having lots of IPs on different class C is better Having multiple servers at multiple ISP that have multiple class C/B as well as using multiple registrars is more hardcore SEO gaming. So long as the domains are not interlinked and they don't target the same keywords.... unlimited...
That is an over looked factor in SEO... Your milf sites, teen sites, etc can all be on the same IP's... but linking only teen to teen on different IPs... So 8 IP's can handle your 64 blogs in 8 different niches |

For the record, we do IP based hosting and provide one IP for each domain hosted. In some cases there is an extra fee for this (ie, specific requests to spread across X C classes, etc).
