How will a recession affect online adult?

I am hearing the 'r' word tossed around on both sides of the Atlantic more frequently over the past few weeks. What knock on effects, if any, do you think we will see in our sector of the industry?

stereolab 01-14-2008 05:28 AM

if an industry relies on credit cards for its revenue, a major credit crunch (happening now) is bad. Very bad.

People do claim porn is recession proof. I think it was playboy who had its highest subscription numbers during the last one. I also know assorted forms of cheap entertainment typically burlesque and other naughty types did well during the great depression.

However today it is much different. People really do not have to pay to play anymore so paying for it is a luxury now and not an escape or even close to mandatory. There is enough free porn floating about to keep one man and his hand busy for a decade long recession.

Not sure if you caught the little news story about the Wal Mart that opened up. They placed two obscure print ads. Much to their surprise they got well over 10,000 applications for 350 jobs. Those little unemployment numbers people throw around have been altered so much they have nothing at all to do with reality either so do not buy the whole 5% crap or whatever number they are claiming right now.

less sales

CyberHustler 01-14-2008 06:03 AM

As long as people get smart and get rid of all this free porn and maybe drop the prices a little we should be OK...

Tat2Jr 01-14-2008 07:01 AM

Concentrate on your sub-niches that aren't on the TGPs. (and yes... they're out there, and no... I'm not saying what they are).

PornDiscounts-R 01-14-2008 07:22 AM

Sure there will be some sales lost. But time has thought us, that people still spend money on the "fun" things in life.
Most need something to brighten up the day or life in tough times, and will in many cases cut down of quality food for one to still have money for entertainment :2 cents:

Another one of the reasons that I work a lot with 'true' fetishes because for somebody with a real fetish it isn't a luxury to satisfy their fetish urges, it is a requirement to their happiness. I love fetish and micro-niche within fetish for this reason..and no I am not telling either ;)

Porn can be cheaper than dating a real girl. Less Dates = Morn Porn?

The only thing in adult that is recession proof, is prostitution. Or that is the most recession proof.

ChefJeff 01-14-2008 09:48 AM

Porn, alcohol and drugs always sell more during a recession. It makes people feel better about having very little money. If you're broke, may as well, drink, smoke pot and spank your monkey.

Historically the entertainment industry has done better during recessions. Whether that translates to adult entertainment is another story.

ADL Colin 01-15-2008 06:07 AM

Depends on how long and deep any recession actually is. Online porn did fine in 2001 but that was a short and shallow recession and there was a background of massive growth for the industry already.

2001/2002 were actually the worst revenue numbers for Playboy in the past 10 years and very poor profitability for the company also. I don't think there is much to conclude there though because there is the difficulty of separating the new online competition Playboy has been facing.

Given high energy and food prices, the drop in home values, maxed out credit cards and the credit crunch I think a protracted recession (IF longer than 8 months) could hit us pretty hard. Maybe a loss of sales of as much as 10%.

RedShoe 01-15-2008 06:23 AM

I don't know about y'all, but I'm packin up all my shit and movin' my family to the deep south where none of that shit's gonna git us.

They can take my gun when they pry it from my dead cold hands. I aint gonna let no recession people or any other commies come up in here and take my house and stuff.

There have been recession(s) between 96 and now. We did just fine.

I think it will have more of an effect on the affiliate than program owners so I look forward to a recession. Alot of the affiliates will not be able to afford to keep thier sites going and that means more free traffic for me. Yaaaaaa

This is the first "r" for online porn. Its all an unknown from here on in. I don't think its the end of the world, but people will need to get much smarter in order to make a living.

There hasnt been any recessions between 96 and now. This would be the first true recession the adult online would get hit with. Also people forget to jack off you dont need porn just a big bottle of $1.99 lotion. Im working on doubling our efforts so the numbers can stay close to prerecession numbers. If gets really bad actually it creates a thinning of the heard which isnt bad.
The dot com bust was different, it went to shit alone. Where now you the house bust, the credit bust, gas goes to 4 bucks a gal. The combo isnt a good one for spending on bullshit items.
Where are all those defenders of the W presidency? lol

SleazyDream 01-15-2008 10:07 AM

recessions help industries like booze, fast food and porn.

people in hard times look for and buy more quick fixes

2001. Weak but a recession nonetheless.
