I was shot at while at work and employer made me work the full shift!

I was shot at today by some guy over $20 today at work. After nearly 4 hours of dealing with the police I called the boss. I had been in contact with my office all morning keeping them up to speed, but the neglected to tell anyone in charge. After telling him what happened, the response was just "well call me back when its all over". Finally I did, and just got a "hmmp" after telling him what happened. I waited, no concern for me and I had to ask if I could just take the day off without paying for it since there would be no way for me to make any money with less than 5 hours of work left in my shift. After thinking real hard, he said no and that I could pay for half a days lease and keep working the rest of the day. Then he wished me luck at making enough money to pay for the half lease!

SayWhut 01-22-2008 07:56 PM

candyflip 01-22-2008 08:04 PM

shermo 01-22-2008 08:05 PM

I think you need to switch career paths.

Sorry to hear about the shooting. Are you ok?

pornask 01-22-2008 08:06 PM

We are all just numbers in the end

DirkG 01-22-2008 08:12 PM

New job is right, cabs suck now that the company I was op. manager for sold to the one I work for now. There is nowhere to go in this industry here and I've been trying to leave it since I lost my job in the business sale. I all but got out of adult when 2257 stuff came down hard, but even before that I was only making a few hundred a month with a 50k tgp.

dynastoned 01-22-2008 08:13 PM

lol its not his fault you stayed.. i would have just said fuck this and left.

tony286 01-22-2008 08:14 PM

I wish you luck in finding a better job :)

BradM 01-22-2008 08:14 PM

You are an American with an SSN right? Sell everything, pack up and move to a new state. Sounds like you're in a sour spot. Maybe a change in scenery will change everything.

This would be an option if it were not for my kids, I stay here to stay by them. The job market in Eugene is bad. We are a college town where people come to town to get a degree and then decide no to leave and take jobs driving cabs or working at Mcdonalds. Last year a government study showed 70% of our jobs paid less than what it takes for a person to pay their bills if they are single or if married with more than one kid.

killermule 01-22-2008 08:52 PM

Lol. 70%

Think its time you guys moved :P

Why dont you just change company??? :|

NosMo 01-22-2008 09:14 PM

Driving a cab sucks major ass. I drove a hack in Phx at night for 2 years....It was very special. and while I will never drive a cab again. Yes I made good money, I got to meet every loser, con artist , hooker, and drug addict in the greater phx area. While I was never shot. I have had several guns pressed to my head, attempted throat slicing (moron), and one cracked up idiot that tried to smash in the back of my head with a rock, while I was driving him down the freeway.....

Switch to porn full time or move. No future in driving a cab.

doesn't mcdonalds have bullet proof windows?

collegeboobies 01-22-2008 09:55 PM

Thats when you contact the guy in jail and tell him who owns the place and has the real money. haha

My mom (in eugene) has a small business, and she had a guy with a PHD in physics apply to be a receptionist for $9/hr. It's a nice town and I love visiting (and feel like a king with the big city salary), but having no industry hurts a lot.

Boobzooka 01-22-2008 10:21 PM

Hey I saw your story on the local news today! Didn't think anyone in Eugene owned a gun ...

I have lived most of my life in this area, currently just south of albany.
Spent many years in eugene/springfield area.
Sorry to say but if you would look for work in out of the way places or spots you think you wouldn't be able to work you will find there are many available jobs for people that do not specialize or have much in the way of "skills"
Many small manufacturing places, Furniture/wood shops, motor coach builders (junction city) hire general labor people and show you exactly what to do.
My sister and husband have no skills what so ever and are making a very nice living working at the coach builders.
Hit up property management offices, a friend recently landed a job fixing houses to get them ready for rent. Broken door knobs, loose gutters etc.... he started out at $15 an hr with an instant bump to $17 after 6 months and no issues.
If you can fix cars thats a huge plus, shops from eugene to portland are begging for good mechanics and paying well to get them.
If you want work other than shit jobs and fastfood it's there you just gotta go out and find it. Screw the want ads and temp agencies, knock on doors you might just be amazed at what you find.

Sucks that this happened to you because for most calls your boss gets it's 100% bullshit. That's the issue. He's thinking is it real this time or is it another story from another virtual convict I hired.

I had a neighbor that drove a van and he decided to fuck off all day and not answer the radio. So when the company asked him where he was he told them he got a call from the hospital because his girlfreind was admitted after being pistol whipped by her ex boyfriend so he rushed over and stayed by her side all day. Too bad he forgot that, in real life, he would have called into work on the radio and told them that he was going to the hospital. :1orglaugh

He was fired on the spot.

papill0n 01-23-2008 08:22 PM

If there's no work how can it be a nice town? Just curious how that works.

I don't know much about the local job market since I'm self-employed, but I could see how a lot of people would come here just to go to college then fall in love with the place. Eugene is .... unique. After living here a while, I wouldn't ever move back to a big city, even though it would be much easier for business.

No truer words were ever spoken here.

And not only are we numbers, but we are ruled by them as well.
