It's whatever is most comfortable for you.

I was trained to type back in the days of Remington typewriters so my seating position is probably quite different to a lot of people - plus I use the legs on the back of the keyboard to give it some angle.

But if it helps the cushion on my chair is about 6 inches below the top of the desk and I definitely don't lean forward - but then I've also got long arms.

I understand what you're going through though - we bought a new chair for my office a couple of months ago and I couldn't use it because it was just that little bit too low at it's highest point.

I ended up pulling it to pieces and using it to replace the arms and back on my old chair just so that I had the right height. When you're sitting in the chair for 8 to 10 hours a day it's important to get it right.

I wouldn't be listening to that sales guy at all - in the old-fashioned typewriter days typists were taught to sit with their backs straight and there's no reason why that should be any different today.

never set the chair higher than your table
