Let me make a call.

baddog 01-27-2008 03:05 PM

http://www.ontrackdatarecovery.com/
100% recovery
pricey - standard service level is sufficient

MaDalton 01-27-2008 03:05 PM

http://www.ontrackdatarecovery.com/

they can do nearly everything - but it can be very expensive.

I've heard drivesavers is the best from both an IT pro I know and from the Apple store. http://www.drivesavers.com/ I sent them one drive that couldn't be recovered, but they were very professional, very fast and didn't charge me a dime, even though they paid for all the overnight shipping. Good people!

moneybiz 01-28-2008 03:15 AM

first off sorry to hear that. Have you tried to freeze the drive? Take it out put in the freezer over night, put it back in your comp sometimes you can get a few min to get the data off before the drive heats up and crashes. It really works and has saved me once.

I kind of figured that price was all relative to what you had to lose, and it sounded like you had a lot to lose.

Glad to be of assistance.

very pricy thing to do.
if it's the OS and not the hard drive then you can boot under a linux live CD and see if you can get access to your HD files.
i believe you can use knoppix verision of linux to get access to your HD if you can and then you can copy them to a USB key.
if the HD is completly done then you have no choice but pay the money.

LiveDose 02-01-2008 02:41 PM

Glad you got your data. Bookmarked.

Does that actually work?

jakethedog 02-01-2008 07:24 PM

I have actually pulled a HD apart and tried myself ..turns out your need an anti-static 100% dust proof room to do that ... lol .. but it was fun to try ..

As I told him, just call them. Prices are going to vary. They will tell you over the phone.

Like BadDog said, they will give you a price range of usually $500-$1500, just depends. They will send you a Email with a letter to take to the UPS store, and overnight it to them for FREE. They will then look at it, and give you an exact price quote in a couple of days. They will also allow you to see what they have recovered, and you can also decide what to pay to have recovered or not. It also depends on how hard it is to recover the info.

My HD was 300gig I believe it had 256 gig of data. 100% was recovered.
My Total was $1,000 for these priceless photos, next day air shipping both ways, and a 500 gig external hard drive...

Every situation is different.......

V_RocKs 02-01-2008 10:47 PM

$1,000 is not a bad deal when the drive has what??? $70,000 worth of content on it?

It had all my Family photos / videos on it since 1999.

Mutt 02-01-2008 11:04 PM

For everything else, There is Master Card.

In the $1000 they included an external 500GB with your data on it?

Yes, they did. But, Like I said every case is different. Maybe my data was easy to recover????

maybe, but nonetheless very nice. :thumbsup I had data failure a few years ago and I had to do recovery (~1.5TB) total cost = $5,000. :2 cents:

rowan 02-02-2008 01:10 AM

In what way did the HD fail? Was it mechanical?

Mine is clicking, so I think mine is a mechanical failure, I doubt there is actual data loss.

Sebastian

Spyce 02-02-2008 12:37 PM

Good luck recovering your data... seems hard drives always crash at critical moments... :-(

Yes, mine was clicking also...
They did tell me it was a mechanical failure....
I kinda knew this, since my entire computer hit the floor...

Phill 02-02-2008 12:54 PM

That's a classic, it's usually the head actuator skipping the platters hence the clicking. Luckily there's a high success rate for recovery if you know what you're doing. Now go copy that data and store the backup in another location! :)
