PC gamers: are there any still here?

...or has everyone gone console now?

I'm finally going to get out of 2003 and splurge for some new games. I'd like some input on what games are good, either right now or in the past 5 years or so. I know there are tons of games that I've missed and I'm sure quite a few are worth playing. I'm not into the big online multiplayer games, I mostly stick to those that are single player or single with multiplayer option.

And if you can manage it, type out the full names instead of abreviations. Not everyone knows what "WZ3" and "RE2" mean. (see? I just made those up)

Games I've played and liked:

Max Payne 1 & 2
Return to Castle Wolfenstein
Halo 1
Morrowind (have also played a ton of mods for it)
Oblivion

Games I'm currently considering:

Crysis
Farcry 1

What games do you guys recommend? Like I said, even if you go back in your inventory a few years, if it was a killer game that you loved let me know about it.

I am running XP home edition on a dual core 2.6 ghz with a gig of RAM. I wouldn't be surprised to find that I'll need to upgrade before being able to play some of the newer games. *sigh* :(

Gasper 01-31-2008 09:07 AM

Yeah me and a good friend of mine play NBA 08' and Fifa 08' from time to time on my PC. Once a month or so I play the Live for speed car simulation game. (not need for speed). :2 cents:

SayWhut 01-31-2008 09:08 AM

I heard you need a 1337 system to run Crysis

Fletch XXX 01-31-2008 09:09 AM

I stopped buying consoles with the PS1 and then started only playing online games. Such as http://www.uo.com & http://www.worldofwarcraft.com

Recommended system requirements for Crysis:

OS - Windows XP / Vista
Processor - Intel Core 2 DUO @ 2.2GHz
Memory - 2.0 GB RAM
GPU - NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GTS/640 or similar

I'll have to add some memory is all. Looks like I'm in the zone otherwise.

CDSmith 01-31-2008 09:22 AM

Again, I am not looking for console games. I don't own one. I play only PC games, all of them single player or single w/ multi-player option (Like Halo, Wolfenstein, etc).

Have never been interested in any of the big online games either. I've never played Everquest, world of warcraft, etc.

bronco67 01-31-2008 09:25 AM

I just got a PS3, but mostly for the Blu Ray. PC games will always rule.

Highly recommend CRYSIS. The best game I've ever played. Nothing even comes close...just a pure 15 hour PC gaming orgasm that will make you spurt love juice all over your screen.

just make sure you have beast of computer for full spurtage.

JamesK 01-31-2008 09:28 AM

I stopped playing console games since the PS2 came out.

polish_aristocrat 01-31-2008 09:31 AM

i'm not a gamer at all,

never got into the console stuff, i wouldnt recognize a wii from an xbox etc

never played all this WoW either, i remember i used to be playing warcraft 2 ages ago though :)

anyone still remembers that ?

SayWhut 01-31-2008 09:32 AM

I used to play Quake III Arena and CS 1.6/Sauce back in the day but stopped due to other commitments.

Some of my friends are obsessed with Eve Online.

atom 01-31-2008 09:39 AM

Hey CD, I loved Farcry, the graphics were breath taking. The game play suffers a little bit because of this but overall the game is worth owning. The multiplayer online is pretty good as well.

I would have even more memory then 2 gig, and atleast at 8800 gts video card if you want to play Crysis at decent settings.

Fletch XXX 01-31-2008 09:47 AM

can you even browse the internet nowadays without 2 gigs of ram? :1orglaugh

8800 will make it look pretty, but I found out that CPU will make or break frame rate.

I'm thinking of going 3 gig.

I currently have the 6600 vid card. Will have to do something about that as well.

My 2.6 dual core should be more than adequate though. Shouldn't it?

I think its CounterStrike... used to loved that game :thumbsup

Fizzgig 01-31-2008 10:00 AM

I haven't bought a new PC game in over 5 years.

WarChild 01-31-2008 10:17 AM

Played Crysis, was pretty fun. Requires good hardware.

Right now I'm really liking Savage 2. It's fun as fuck.

FlexxAeon 01-31-2008 10:21 AM

don't ask me i still play final fantasy 11 (when i have time)....haven't really bought a game since that came out

Horny Dude 01-31-2008 10:26 AM

I was a PC gamer until I got an Xbox360! That Darkfall looks good!

crockett 01-31-2008 10:26 AM

I was always into the Rainbow 6 series of games, Counter Strike, the Battle field series basiclly all the war FPS games I liked Return to Castle Wolfenstein too.

Now days I'm playing Aces High 2 the game you see advertised on the military channel all the time. It's a world war two combat flight sim. The graphics aren't up to par of the current gen of shelf bought games but it's still fun as hell and challenging.

When I search for it on amazon all I can find is "Savage: The Battle for Newerth"

Savage 2 results: "Forgotten Realms Archives: Collection 2"

Is that it?

And... what are the Savage games about, and why are they good?

CaptainHowdy 01-31-2008 10:34 AM

My last PC game was "Sam & Max Hit the Road "...

There are a couple of sequels to it now. "Sam and Max" looks to have gotten a lot of great reviews... http://www.amazon.com/review/product...teDes cending

Barefootsies 01-31-2008 10:56 AM

Nope. I'm still around.

But I have to be careful and balance out play time with making loot.

;)

dready 01-31-2008 11:03 AM

Looks interesting, but I'm afraid the original game might not play on XP.

It's pretty old.

Rattling off titles is nice, but what's nicer is knowing what is so good about them, as in what was it about those particular games you liked? Was there anything you didn't like about them?

Let's take Bioshock for example. Here's a review I found on Amazon just a few seconds ago...
Quote:

I'd have to say, one of the best games in a long time. Great story, great features, weapons, enemies...yada yada yada. The game itself is amazing. UNFORTUNATELY, the game is written so poorly or was rushed or whatever, but it crashes like you wouldn't believe. You can have a fully loaded system, and it still finds a way to crash. I have Windows Vista Ultimate (no, that's not the problem), 2GB of DDR2-6400 RAM, Nvidia 7900GT, Tons of SATA Drives, onboard HD sound...etc. All the latest in DirectX and RealTek audio drivers, and still no luck. It's probably crashed 30 times in the first week of playing the game. Yes, there are people out there who are lucky, but it's rare. Just check out the 2k forums and other blogs/websites, and you'll see pages of complaints. Some people recommend lowering the resolution, some say the sound... nothing works. Imagine having to lower the graphics quality down lower, and the detail lower, to play a PC game in 2007 with PCs that are well-equipped for the current software? Joke and a half. They'd better come out with a patch or fix soon. Very disappointing!

Now as for Orange Box.... there are a ton of good reviews here, but there are also a high percentage of one-star reviews, mostly to do with the "STEAM" issue and how so many people despise it. Tell me why anyone should buy this game.

Savage 2 "A Tortured Soul" http://savage2.s2games.com/main.php

It's made by Mark D's video game company. Basically it's a RTS for the commander of each time, and then everyone else plays as FPS. Beasts vs. Savages. There ARE NPCs in the game, you can get experience from, but you also get it from building, healing, fighting, destroying etc. Basically each map you try and take the other's base that their commander is directing.

It's really fun, and plays like an MMORPG for the most part, except 40 minutes at a time or so.

Rodent 01-31-2008 11:27 AM

I hated crysis. And yes I have a good system, 3gbram 4200x2amd, 8800gtoc.

Can I ask why you hated it?

A few mentioned F.E.A.R.... I just checked it out, the reviews look pretty good. I think I'll pick up the trilogy.

Evil Chris 01-31-2008 11:47 AM

I was never much for PC gaming. Occasionally I will play Sim City or an old version of C&C.

Ya some Steam updates have been complete joke but you REALLY REALLY should get the Orange Box. I'm just working my way through HL2 and I'm pumped that I have a couple addons to dig into after. :thumbsup

dready 01-31-2008 12:49 PM

Orange Box has 5 games in one, although it's really 3. Half-Life 2 and it's add-ons are very fun FPSs. Portal is just a great time, and for online you have Team Fortress which is more playable than Counter Strike, IMO.

You get hours and hours of fun out of this, and you can get it online through Steam, so no bother with a trip to the store. I actually quite like Steam. http://www.steampowered.com

If you liked Max Payne, Alan Wake looks like it'll be awesome.. it's the same people putting it out. Who knows when we'll see it though, and it's for Vista only. http://www.alanwake.com/

Meeper 01-31-2008 12:53 PM

Used to actually be on a sponsored Counter Strike team haha. Played Starcraft, and DOTA as well. Not so much anymore though.
