Chinese Domain Name Registration Fraud...
 

These guys sent me the following email:


Dear CEO,

We are the domain name registration organization in Asia, deal with the domain name registration and dispute internationally. Now we have something important need to confirm with your company.

On the Feb. 11, 2008, we received an application formally. One company named "Tainyo International Holdings Ltd " wanted to register following Domain names: XXXXXX.net.cn
XXXXXX.org.cn
XXXXXX.com.hk
XXXXXX.hk
XXXXXX.cc
XXXXXX.tw
XXXXXX.com.tw
XXXXXX.asia
Internet brand keyword: XXXXXX


through our body.

After our initial examination, we found that the keywords and domain names applied for registration are as same as your company's name and trademark. We don't know whether you have any relation with them. These days we are dealing with it. Now we have not finished the registration of Tainyo yet, in order to deal with this issue better, Please contact us by telephone or email as soon as possible.

After exchanging emails several more emails, they send me a document called a 'domain name registration dispute form', which is basically an invoice to purchase those domains above.

Here's the kicker...The minimum registration term is TEN YEARS!!! You have a choice of registering domain names for 10 years, 20 years, or 30 years.... THIRTY YEARS!!!

So at ten years a piece, the total cost was $8300 ...

Anyone else ever get an email like this??

1.''Wandi Investments Limited ''is a domain name investment company, they want to register these names before you and sell back to you to gain profits.
2. It may be a commercial method, Wandi company is consigned by your competitor to register, let your clients feel confusion.
3.They try to get your good image for their business.

We knew you have registered the domain name “xxxxxxxxxxxxx.com" and own the intellectual property, this is why we informed you. But now Wandi company wanted to apply for other domain names and internet brand Keyword you have not registered yet. You must know that domian is not trademark and the domain name takes open registration, this is international domain name registration principle. So Wandi company has right to register them. As a domain name registrar, we have no right to dispute their application. So required by the Chinese Government to inform your company to protect your interest. But as the company whose trademarks relate to apply domains , you will get the priority to register these domain names and internet brand keyword.

We think these domain names are very important for you! Of course, each company has their own idea. If you don't think their application will affect your company, you can give up, we will finish their registration. But if you think these domain names are useful for your company, we can send an application form to you and help you register these within dispute period. This is the only way to prevent domain name grab. Pls let us know your decision ASAP, so that we can handle the next step.

The funniest thing of all is that I can buy most of those domain names on GoDaddy right now for $30...Are people really dumb enough not to check to see if the domain name in question is available?
