Dedicated 10Mbps Unmetered for $59/Mo??? AWESOME!

Well I will have to start saying good bye to my current provider who has supported me well for the last 8-9 months. But when a deal like this comes around and I am paying exactly the same amount a month for virtual - it's time to start migrating to dedicated.

http://www.alphared.com/listump.cfm

And premium bandwidth also! I've seen one sponsor and their FHGs load and it's stupid how fast that server was... looking forward to a very long term relationship with this company.

And apparently they have more servers at this price point as well :)

stev0 02-18-2008 10:22 PM

Nice deal, but you sure you want to be restricted to a 10mbps port? Would be perfect if your traffic never spikes above 10mbps, if it does you'd definitely want something burstable.

dougeetx 02-18-2008 10:39 PM

For that $59/month, you get:

512 MB ram upgradeable to only 1 Gig for an extra $15/month
Add cpanel for an extra $40/month
Only 1 IP (no private DNS)

You're definitely only getting a $59/month server.

I hear you on the ram, but only noobs need cpanel.

I'd pay $40 to have that shit taken off a server. :1orglaugh

You get what you pay for. Hosting especially.

"AMD64 Sempron 2800+ / 333FSB / 128K Cache"

I don't know much about AMD models but the FSB speed and cache amount suggests it's very a low end and/or obsolete processor. It may be second hand h/w, which isn't terrible, but you'd better hope the host has replaced the mechanical parts such as the fans and hard drive.

Another possibility at that price is that the bandwidth is oversold, you'll never be hitting your head on the 10Mbps ceiling because lots of other customers are fighting you for net bandwidth.

Post back here in a month or two and let us know what happens. :)

LiveDose 02-19-2008 11:51 AM

Good luck with that...

darksoul 02-19-2008 12:11 PM

The semptron is similar to the intel celeron i have had many boxes on the alphared network never had an issue of bandwith being oversold.

a 10 meg port kind of sucks tho but for that price its not bad.

Just noticed my local supplier is clearing out the AMD Sempron 2800+ CPU at $AUD25 each... that's about $USD22. :helpme

sharphead, when you get your server install something called smartmontools and check the "POH" or "Power On Hours" value of your drive. If it's more than single or double digits then I'd complain. :2 cents:

on a $59 server i would not be surprised if its a used drive.

I still dont get how anyone can make any $$$$ with the cost of space and power on servers this cheap.

Shoplifter 02-19-2008 09:06 PM

Some great prices there...but caveat emptor.

However the other side of the pricing coin is how we are getting raped for the same service by some well known hosts.

We have one who is charging us $399 for 10 mbit unmetered...Robbery.

CIVMatt 02-19-2008 09:24 PM

I host with Host Head and OC3.... and reguardless of what I spend I can pick up a phone or icq or email and ask any question or request and have it done it minutes.

I just had to have 6 pieces of software installed on my server and I emailed and I shit you not it was done in 8 minutes.

I love that kind of service.

Snake Doctor 02-19-2008 10:19 PM

I've seen threads like these for the past 7 years. It's always the same.

Someone comes in here and tells us that the companies like Techie Media, ISprime, Natnet, etc are ripping us off.

Then about every third month they're on here again looking for a "good, cheap host" because they're sick of the support (or lack thereof) where they're hosted now.

woj 02-19-2008 10:31 PM

Sounds like a great deal, but unless you know how to manage the server yourself, it's just a matter of time before something fucks up.. and then you are fucked, the host won't do anything for you except reboot the server...

kmanrox 02-20-2008 01:00 AM

sounds to me like a good deal for someone wanting some leeway from their virtual host account doling out galleries every day

The problem with moving from virtual to cheapie unmanaged dedicated is that you suddenly have to learn how to secure and admin your server, or just hope in vain that no one hax0rs j00.

Yeah, I can't figure it out either. I don't know about the costs of wholesale power where they're located but around here if you had a machine that drew an average of 200W, with a typical efficiency power supply, and behind a UPS (which again decreases the overall efficiency) you'd be paying at least $US30 a month for the power alone. Then there's air conditioning, rack space rental, network capacity upgrades, security, lighting, admin and tech staff wages, and finally we can't forget the 10 megabits of included bandwidth at an effective price of about $1 a megabit. :1orglaugh

GrouchyAdmin 02-20-2008 04:20 PM

You're on a used server that's already been paid off and would otherwise be taken out of commission. You won't get 10mbit; you're on an unmetered port, but the bandwidth is awful and it is shaped to hell. If you peak over about 1.5, they'll bitch and tell you to upgrade or leave. They're playing the same combination of shell game and 'nobody will use that much' law of averages that everyone else is.

TidalWave 02-20-2008 04:51 PM

alphared actually offers dedicated bandwidth so according to that you would be able to use your entire 10mbps without issue.

in the end its $59, so why not signup and try it out. nothing to lose

Another person that knows nothing about alphared talking shit

you guys are funny you got a link somewhere to the FDC like alphared shared crap your talking about ?

tranza 02-20-2008 05:24 PM

Well, to tell you the truth it DOES seem like a good option if you are currently hosting your site on a Virtual server, don't have quite a lot of traffic and will be hosting mainly static files (instead of scripts).

:2 cents:

I'm going to try it out. There are a million other ways I could blow $59 so why not on this.

Sure it's not suitable for mission critical ops...But I could probably do a lot of galleries on there until I maxed it out. And that's worth about $59 to me these days...not the $400+ I might be charged elsewhere.

if you look around their site you can find the same server uncapped with $8 a meg overage :)

and you had network issues ?

I had a half dozen servers there at one point and never had any network issues.
