From a usability standpoint tabs are an elegant and neat feature that allows the end user to quickly and easily reference which page/section they are in. This is vitally important because persistent location indicators (breadcrumbs as well) can give the end user a sense of direction and depth in an otherwise intangible platform.

What's good is tabbed browsing with AJAX so just the content box updates from the selected tab without having to reload the entire page.
