Movies that you think are underrated and not enough folks have seen
I think most people have a film or two they enjoy that they think should have been bigger than it was at the box office.
I will throw my first two into the pot: Wonder Boys - Micheal Douglas, Tobey Maguire, Robert Downey Jr. - Nice little film about an author who teaches at a college that once wrote a really popular book but is now having trouble following it up. It has some really funny bits, a good heart and I like Micheal Douglas actually looking his age in a film. Strange Days - Ralph Fiennes , Angela Bassett, Juliette Lewis, Tom Sizemore - Written by James Cameron it is a sci fi action film about a former cop that has become a strung out dealer for a system that allows people to 'jack in' to another person's memories and live them as if they were their own. Through this he discovers a police conspiracy. Which films would you throw into the pot? |
House of Games
Release Date: 11 October 1987 (USA) Director: David Mamet A famous psychologist, Margaret Ford, decides to try to help one of her patients get out of a gambling debt. She visits the bar where Mike, to whom the debt is owed, runs poker games. He convinces her to help him in a game: her assignment is to look for "tells", or give-away body language. What seems easy to her becomes much more complex. Trivia: According to Mamet, despite the excellent reviews the film received in a limited showing in four theaters, Orion decided against spending the money for the prints and publicity that would have accompanied a general release and sent the film almost directly to TV and video. Cast Lindsay Crouse ... Margaret Ford Joe Mantegna ... Mike Mike Nussbaum ... Joey Lilia Skala ... Dr. Littauer J.T. Walsh ... The businessman Willo Hausman ... Girl with book Karen Kohlhaas ... Prison ward patient Steven Goldstein ... Billy Hahn Jack Wallace ... Bartender, House of Games Ricky Jay ... George / Vegas Man G. Roy Levin ... Poker player Bob Lumbra ... Poker player Andy Potok ... Poker player Allen Soule ... Poker player Ben Blakeman ... Bartender, Charlie's Tavern |
Will check yours out Sarah!
Here's my :2 cents: Thursday: http://imdb.com/title/tt0124901/ Former criminal gets involved in all kinds of crazy situations. Hillarious. Once Were Warriors: http://imdb.com/title/tt0110729/ This movie is based on a modern day New Zealand family, dealing with near poverty and violence from all sides, including the often inebriated father. |
amores perros, mexican film, probably among the better films I've seen.

I have some how accidentally stumbled into being fairly well versed in Central and Southern American cinema. I am on the look for anything new from the region because it feels like I have seen more of what is on offer from the past few years. |
i just saw AWAKW yesterday on dvd and that was actually pretty good. Do not know why it flopped in theaters...
|
I dunno if it really counts but a lot of people I speak to arent up on the film that I really enjoyed, Things to do in Denver when youre Dead.

No lie, I was going to post House of Games as well. Great, understated film with Mamet's typically offbeat dialogue.
Also: The Cooler - William Macy and Alec Baldwin star, gambling fans will probably appreciate it most. Thirteen Days - Excellent film about JFK and his staff during the Cuban Missile Crisis. I could think of many more after I actually wake up... |
Across The Universe <--- This is a Musical based around 20 of the best Beatles songs, it is hands down a great movie! and deff worth a watch or two (or three) Features cameos by Bono & Eddie Izzard.
Slip Stream <-- (Dunno if this is actually out yet I got an advanced screener for this one) Sir Anthony Hopkins Wrote, Directed and Stars in this "David Lynch" style movie, IF your a fan of Lynch's movies you'll deff want to give this one a look! Mr. Frost By far this is one of my fav "unknown" movies, made in the 80's starring Jeff Goldbloom as none other then the devil, it's a great movie for sure! Dead Man Last but not least another great film no one has seemed to have heard of, featuring an all star cast, lead up by Johnny Depp, written and directed by Jim Jarmusch, it also features: Lance Henriksen, Michael Wincott (Bad Guy From The Crow), John Hurt, Iggy Pop, Gabriel Byrne and others. -Loki- |
Heavenly Creatures -- one of Peter Jackson's early films, about the true story of 2 Australian girls who have a lesbian crush and kill their mother. kate Winslet's first movie.
Sunshine -- A GREAT scifi flick directed by Danny Boyle about a crew of astronauts on a mission to re-ignite the dying sun with a bomb the size of Manhattan. One of the most beautiful looking movies I've ever seen, it has a terrific score. No one saw it, but in 20 years, I'll bet it's looked upon as this generation's 2001. Sexy Beast -- British crime thriller starring Ray Winstone and Ben Kingsley as the scariest fucking dude you're ever likely to meet. Freeway -- Reese Witherspoon like you've never seen her before, and Keifer Sutherland as murdering pervert. That's all I say about that one. Down in the Valley -- Can't say too much for fear of giving too much away, but Ed Norton is great in this flick, and favorite hottie, Evan Rachel Wood is in it also. The Descent -- only the best horror movie in the last decade. Five cave exploring ho's run into some trouble underground. |

Curdled it was produced by Quentin Tarantino but was never pushed and barley made it out of the indie theaters.
London Hard Candy I am not an easy person to shock but this movie shocked me. First Snow on of the greatest movies I have ever seen. |

i heard alot of people saying they found "strange days" very good and underrated, ive seen it more than once and it just has a b-movie feeling to me, its not underrated - its just not a very good movie (in my opinion).
i agree about "thursday" thats indeed a good movie, ive seen it a really long time ago, i remember the chick in that red latex dress gave me a boner. |
The Shawshank Redemption
|
Clifford The really big Movie.
I dont get to see much else, unless it's the Backyardagins. or something similar. :( |
Not really underrated, but I think because it's a Chinese movie, not many people from the western civilization know about it. It's one of my favorite movies.
Mou gaan dou (Internal Affairs) Shawn Yue plays a young police officer who has been sent undercover as a mole in the local mafia. Edison Chen plays a young mafia member who is infiltrating the police force. Years later, their older counterparts, Tony Leung and Andy Lau respectively, race against time to expose the mole within their midsts and destroy him. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0338564/ |
Anybody seen Baraka? Another good one I seen is Riding Giants. Haha and no it's not porn, it's about big wave surfing!
|
i know that everyone else will probably think it's horrible, but i love the movie vulgar. it's a dark comedy that i had to turn away from at times because it was so.. vulgar. :) but in the end it's all about karma, and that's what made the movie for me.
|
I love Strange Days.
Already mentioned: Way of the Gun (the line was "shut that c'unt's mouth before i come over there and fuck start her head" btw) Shawshank Redemption (I can't believe someone mentioned this because its hardly underrated) Freeway Pi Gummo Hard Candy Other movies I'd recommend: Swimming with Sharks (Kevin Spacey, Benecio Del Turo) May (thanks ninjasteve!) Memento Dark City Fido (A touching dark comedy about a boy and his zombie) Happiness Can't remember any more as I'm heading out the door, but i'll be back later. |

I saw Heavenly Creatures a long time ago and enjoyed it. Freeway is one that I really like and a lot of people haven't seen. It was before Keifer had made his comeback and you hadn't seen him in anything much. So, to have him be the human version of the Big Bad Wolf (Freeway is a modern and rather different telling of Little Red Riding Hood) was strange and good at the same time. Plus, mature (and now passed away) porn star Kitty Fox is briefly in it. The Descent is one my BF really liked and I thought was okay. |

Furiously adding to Netflix!! And agree with the ones I've watched except for the Robin Williams one - just didn't get into that.
La Vi En Rose - while the movie skipped around too much, the acting was spot on. Everything is Illuminated The Lives of Others - probably one of my favorite "last scenes". Crazy Love - just to make you know there are people crazier than you out there ;) In the Valley of Elah - excellent movie - very anti war for those of you into that |
double post
