Was wondering. I can not seem to find it in google.

OK. Now I look it up, and I find 19.5 gallons of gas form a barrel of 42 gallons of oil.

That does not mention the other uses of the remains for things like lubricants etc.

Well that doesn't add up. that would mean at $3.15 a gal, they are only getting $61.42 a barrel.

Found this

Quote:

What A Barrel Of Crude Oil Makes

Product Gallons per barrel

gasoline 19.5
distillate fuel oil 9.2
(Includes both home heating oil and diesel fuel)
kerosene-type jet fuel 4.1
residual fuel oil
(Heavy oils used as fuels in industry, marine transportation and for
electric power generation) 2.3
liquefied refinery gasses 1.9
still gas 1.9
coke 1.8
asphalt and road oil 1.3
petrochemical feedstocks 1.2
lubricants 0.5
kerosene 0.2
other 0.3

Figures are based on 1995 average yields for U.S. refineries. One barrel
contains 42 gallons of crude oil. The total volume of products made is 2.2
gallons greater than the original 42 gallons of crude oil. This
represents "processing gain."

This is interesting. At least we get an idea of what our money does. Thanks

It's funny, diesel fuel is a by-product of making gasoline ... it costs less to produce yet sells for more per gallon than gasoline.

I smile when I think of all those saps who bought a diesel Benz at the time when diesel was cheaper than regular gasoline.

They get ton of other stuff out of it too, and some may cost more than $3/gallon...

JasonSmokes 03-14-2008 09:51 PM

I think barrel is outdated terminology, I don't think I've ever seen a barrel truck going down the road.

The price is still quoted as "per barrel" now a days...
