Man they always have those cranes here along the beach. I always hate driving under the fuckers.
btw I couldn't find the video on that yahoo page..here it is on CNN http://www.cnn.com/2008/US/03/15/cra...ml#cnnSTCVideo There was a video on youtube, of a car that was driving down a road and something fell from one of those and totally flattened the car. The people in side never knew what killed them. |
Fu Bar destroyed ?
This is very sad
John PlaGreco, who owns Fu Bar in the crushed building, said he feared one of his employees was dead in the rubble. "Our bar is done," he said. "The crane crashed the whole building. If I wasn't watching a Yankees game, I would've come to work early and gotten killed." |

Interesting.
Normally cranes of this type [box girder] are much taller - they go up to 100 stories. 15 isn't much in comparison. Typically, when they go, they crumple - in principal, much like standing on a softdrink can - the strength of the whole comes from the structure of the individual elements - tap the side of the coke can, the entire thing collapses. Curiously, what seems to have happened here is that the foundations / footings of the crane broke. Normally, these cranes have a hydraulic sleeve at the base, which raises the crane to facilitate the introduction of another box element . If I had to guess, I'd say that was the point of failure - as I couldn't see the boom of the crane, mysteriously. |
