Simple question about FlixPro On2 VP6 - converting to flv - pls help

I am playing with On2's Flix Pro software to convert WMV files to FLV...
And using the VP6 tab in there & putting the VP6 Quality and Sharpness options on the max settings, I am getting much better flv's than when I use other programs or ffmpeg for example.

Is there any downside to using this? Like is there anything that needs to be on the server where these end up being played or anything on ppl's computers that are viewing the vids?

I am wondering why wouldnt somone use this over all the other converters, as the quality and low file size beats everything I have tried so far.

Thank You.

Well you have to pay for that program for one. A lot of webmasters get way with using freeware video tools, especially if they aren't always working with original hi-res source footage like an original content producer usually does. It's the ON2 VP6 codec that makes the output superior to those other options like server side scripts which use a different version codec of Flash to convert already compressed clips that the webmaster might have. I have used Flix Pro's app, but one can also get good output with Sorenson Squeeze and the VP6 codec. The end user experiences it as Flash, no issues.

I use Sorenson Squeeze, not sure if you care or not lol

www.ultrasexsamples.com/ you can see some videos there that I did using Sorenson Squeeze and the on2 vp6 codec.

Thanks... I'm going to download the demo of sorenson squeeze and try that out as well.

Is this what you use: http://www.sorensonmedia.com/pages/?pageID=3 which is $199+$100 for the vp6.

Sorenson doesnt have any demo or trial download?

Jim_Gunn 03-16-2008 07:29 PM

Sorenson does have a demo of an older version last time I checked. not sure if they updated their site to offer a trial on the newest version I have 4.5, I believe. Sorenson still can't add watermarks during the encoding process still however, I keep asking support to add that feature!

On2 VP6 requires Flash 8+ on the client side.

ok... is it pretty common for everyone to have that version of flash now days or ?

Reasonably, yep.

The only other consideration is encoding time, VP6 takes roughly twice as long to encode as Spark.

Cool thanks.

VP6 is much better... I just got the same file size with Sorenon using VP6 that I got with ffmpeg but the video is much better.

Can one of you guys answer this for me, I am now using SORENSON VP6...

I want the vids to playback the best on my site for the surfer, so is it better for me to use....
1. 2-PASS CBR or 2-PASS ABR
2. Key Frame every 300 or 45 frames. and frame rate set to 1:1 for either right?

and for extra credit... 3. its best I maintain Aspect Ratio or have it unconstrained?

Data rate I'm prolly having it at 768 Kbps

Thank you in advance. once i know about the above 3 then I think I am good to go.

Jim_Gunn 03-17-2008 08:26 AM

VIPimp, I doubt that you even need to do 2-pass. I normally use 1 pass CBR to make it encode quicker for all my encoding jobs. Always use a frame rate 1:1 for any encoding job; the key frames you can experiment with but I doubt you will be able to tell the difference; and the settings on the aspect ratio constrained or not will not matter either.
