The way the market looks right now I would say that if you wanna start a paysite you better offer something unique.
Quality content in micro and small niches.
Dating services
Webcam services

All other shit that people can't get for free and that you can make upsells from promoting regular porn....

Every niche has content.. the market is floooooded... not only with content but with people promoting the content..

Judging by your posts I dunno how you will be able to compete with the top converting sites.

You can't ask people this question without showing them what you have to offer.

We don't know if you have an untapped market of the most unique hottest Japanese fetish girls or what...

Their's enuff money in every industry for everyone who is hardworking and GOOD.

depend on the niche and resources that you can get to improve your paysite

so niche & quality might get a chance of success.

This is dumb....Either you're gonna start one or you won't....I was reading back in 2001 on Porn Resource and the MANTRA over there was to not start a paysite...

I think somebody asked this every year... for probably the past 10 years... I think that's your answer.

Still can make a mint in pay sites, but you have to know how to promote, get traffic, and most importantly CONVERT. Anyone telling you there is no money in pay sites doesn't know what they are doing.

:2 cents:

If you wanna make a living of it, you need the following:

1. TONS of fucking TONS of GOOD content. Both pics and movies
2. LOTS of money to promote the shit
3. Good affiliates (comes along if step 1 and 2 are good to go)
4. Good promo tools (fhg, mhg, rss, banners and ads)
5. A lot of time to constantly update every paysite

OR...

you can make some smaller paysites without very much startup cash... Will not make you rich, but it is nice additional money

BVF .. thanks for the straight up advice but what i meant was that, it was 50-50 for success or failure, depending on how you promote the paysites.
