Google Loses Top Exec To Facebook! wtf?

Never thought this would happen in my wildest dreams..

Quote:

Google veteran Sheryl Sandberg has taken the job of chief operating officer at Facebook, a move that deals a blow to the search king. Shares of Google fell about $12, or 2.6%, to $445 in late Tuesday afternoon trading.

As vice president of global online sales and operations at Google (nasdaq: GOOG - news - people ), Sandberg built and managed the company's blockbuster online advertising programs, AdWords and AdSense, which accounted for 99% of its $16.6 billion revenues in 2007. Google said Sandberg will be replaced by her deputy, David Fischer.

Sandberg starts at Facebook later this month. As COO of the popular Palo Alto, Calif.-based social networking site, she will help Facebook scale its operations and expand internationally. "The challenges Facebook faces are scale," Sandberg says. "Facebook is in the process of scaling operationally, geographically and scaling monetization."

Sandberg was coy about discussing more detailed goals that she has in mind for Facebook. "I'm currently a Google executive, so I can't answer questions about Facebook," she told Forbes.com.

In her new role, Sandberg will oversee the company's sales, marketing, business development, human resources, public policy, privacy and communications. Sandberg will report directly to Facebook Chief Executive Mark Zuckerberg. In a statement, Zuckerberg said that Sandberg has "a track record of scaling business operations and building new kinds of advertising networks."

At Facebook, Sandberg says she will draw on her experience helping Google grow rapidly. She started at Google in 2001 when it had only 300 employees. By the end of 2007, the Mountain View, Calif., company had 16,805 employees worldwide. Despite its rapid growth, Sandberg says Google has managed to maintain a culture of openness, creativity and innovation. "As companies get big, they get bureaucratic and stifle innovation," she says. Google, she notes, proves that big companies "can still be bold and be creative."

Facebook has about 500 employees but plans to double its head count by the end of the year.

At Google, Sandberg also helped launched Google.org, the company's philanthropic arm. Prior to Google, Sandberg had been chief of staff to the U.S. Treasury Secretary during the Clinton Administration, a management consultant at McKinsey & Co. and an economist at the World Bank.

Sandberg's departure deals a blow to Google, which has had a complicated relationship with Facebook, losing some mid-level executives and engineers to the site in the past year. It also lost a bidding war with Microsoft (nasdaq: MSFT - news - people ) in 2007 for a stake in Facebook. To counter that, Google launched a program last year to spur the development of a universal social networking platform, "OpenSocial," outside the Facebook system. ( Editor's note: Elevation Partners, which holds a minority stake in Forbes, was also an early investor in Facebook.)

Sandberg's appointment as chief operating officer at Facebook comes a month after the company announced that Owen Van Natta, its chief revenue officer and former COO, would be leaving. Van Natta reportedly left because he wanted to be chief executive of Facebook, but Zuckerberg, who is only 23, doesn't appear to be stepping down anytime soon.

Asked whether she had also been interested in the CEO spot at Facebook, Sandberg, who is 38 and has more experience than Zuckerberg, said the COO job suited her just fine. "I think part of the attraction for this job is to work with and for Mark," she says. "He's extraordinary. He has a very broad vision of what Facebook can be to people."

maybe "google treats their employees like gold" is not so entirely true. Maybe some employee experienced some less than gold treatment.

SHes gonna head up their social ads dept and its gonna be more like adwords.

Zorgman 03-27-2008 02:12 AM

Once you get to the TOP sometimes the job just isn't like you expected and it's always nice to build up something but when you get to the top, you might want to come back down and start again.

bizarrejan 03-27-2008 02:56 AM

Facebook needs her!

mx8829 03-27-2008 03:02 AM

Imagine the stock options she must be getting. same way Meg Whitman became a billionaire running ebay as CEO.

Google is facing what microsoft faced few years ago, lot of their talent switched to google, now they are going to facebook. Real talent always like to move to something fun and exciting.

If you really look closely, google hasn't dont anything fun and exciting lately. They are busy doing the same thing everyone else is doing or buying things. Its good for their pocket, but not fun for the the n3rds :))

Actually Google treats its employees like children. It's very clever. Infantising the workforce. They do your washing for you, they feed you, they have 'cool' environments to work. Meaning that there is no REAL need to go home, thus employees work super long hours, out of choice, because they feel like Google is their parent.

Very interesting and manipulative.

If you look closely googleis doing exciting things on a daily basis.. go take anothe gander

JamesK 03-27-2008 07:15 AM

I don't see what's the problem here? Sure it's big news because it's a loss for Google, but then again maybe she wasn't enjoying her job at Google so well anymore. Why would she stay there, just because Google is the biggest?

I think it's stupid to say you would stay with Google, just because they're the king of search engines. You don't know what she experienced there and her reasons to quit... but I'm sure she made the right decision. What if her boss acted like an ass? Just an example.

Fap 03-28-2008 04:28 PM

james, eh i just i think its weird to think that an exec at google will go to facebook.. but then again facebook is kind of a big deal

payd2purv 03-28-2008 04:39 PM

banthis,

Looks to me her job at Google was done.

She needed a change.

Facebook definately needs to improve it's marketing.

as they have an over abundance of un-tapped potential.

2012 03-28-2008 04:41 PM

facebook is a new challenge ... the googles is old hat

slapass 03-28-2008 05:12 PM

maybe they pay more??? Seems to me that would make the decision easier or harder. Neither compnay is going out of business anytime soon so who pays better is the big question.

Farang 03-28-2008 05:21 PM

Google top exec female? wtf?

woj 03-28-2008 05:25 PM

I'm sure she knows what she is doing... she probably got great pay + great stock options in the deal... and as long as she does her job, those stock options will be worth probably gazillions in a year or 2...
