Anyone know what LOWLANDS is like in Holland?

Me and my friend are looking to go to Lowlands for august and rock out, but is it a good festival?

whats like the downsides? is there like pickpocketing and stuff?
what are the upsides? good lineup? a wild time?
Also what are the people like? (friendly?) is there many english or english speaking people as I dont speak a word of dutch.

Also what would travel be like, I reckon we would fly into some cheap airport near amsterdam or something, is it easy to get to?

Anyway this is just looking for info, I just want to get some knowledge and stuff on how easy and fun it will be.

I lived in The Netherlands for a bit and incidentally Netherlands translated in English is lowlands. I love the country and the people and if I didn't have a family would likely live there again.

In any case English is spoken by most everyone (even a 70 year old woman in a small bakery in Maastricht)

I've never been to the festival but a friend of mine that covers a lot of European festivals says it's one of the better ones. He's never had a problem with anyone and no crime petty or otherwise.

I would recommend you go. Even if the festival isn't that great you'd likely have a blast.

Lowlands is the best festival I've ever been to. Period.

Great people from all over Europe. Everybody speaks English. Easy to reach.

The fun thing about Lowlands is that it's a very diverse. Large acts, small acts. Music, theatre. There is something for almost every musical taste.

The only airport to arrive in the area is Amsterdam Airport (Schiphol). From there you take the train to Amersfoort station. In Amersfoort you switch trains and take the train to Harderwijk. At the little station of Harderwijk there are always special Lowlands/Walibi World busses waiting that'll bring you in about 30 minutes to the festival area.

The only disadvantage of the Lowlands festival is that it takes place "in the middle of nowhere". There is no city, town or village nearby, so you really have to enjoy yourself at the festival area all the time that you stay there. That probably won't be hard, but still something you should be aware of I think.

The name "Lowlands" is based on the fact that the festival takes place in a true Dutch polder and those areas of our country are always below sea level. So, that is very low land. :)

More info available on the website of the festival of course: http://www.lowlands.nl/content.php?page=english_intro

It's surely worth visiting. Have fun!

Jens Van Assterdam 04-01-2008 01:50 AM

Dont worry about the language. I got an appartment in Amsterdam and barely speak any dutch at all. Most people in the netherlands speak perfect english. In every bar, club, shop, what ever you go, your fine with english :)

Sam Granger 04-01-2008 02:21 AM
